  3. 3. GOTHIC AND MODERNISM IN BARCELONABarcelona is a big city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia. It was aRoman castrum called Barcino, near the Mediterranean sea. In the Middle Age it became a royal burgh. Under the influence of this period, we have a lot of places and buildings that we can visit. It is a rute for visit in BCN, called Gothic, forexample, Sta Maria del Mar Church, the Cathedral, Born square, and alot of palaces, like in Montcada st. where now there are the PicassoMuseum, Collection Dress, and Art Galleries. Nowadays it is a livelyneighbourhood, with restaurants, bars, pubs, shops, etc. After this period, BCN had another golden period in the 19th century, called Modernism. In this period the middle class built the new town. Nowadays we can see the finest modernist architecture, for example Batlló house, Ametller house called “La Pedrera”, Güell Park, “Sagrada Familia”, Music Palace “Palau de la Música”, “La casa de les Punxes” etc, built by the most famous architects like Antoni Gaudi, Puig i Cadafalch, Domènech i Muntaner... When people come to BCN, they can visit this route.
