Orientation
We celebrate the Kartini Day on April 21 every year.On that day we commemorate Kartini’s spirit for women emancipation. She struggled for women, so that they would have the same opportunities as men would, in education, government, and others.
Event 1
R.A Kartini was born on April,21,1879 in Jepara, Central Java. Her father was the hed of Japara Regency. She grew up in a strict and moderet family where every woman was only allowed to stay at home as a house wife and take dare of her family. Awoman wasn’t allowed to have allowed to have high education. It also happened to Kartini. She only got education up to E.L.S (Europese Lagere School ), like elementary schools nowadays.

Kartini felt that it was unfair. She really wanted to countinue her study higher, but her parents would not allow her.. Having such feelings, she liked to make friends with educated people and spent her time reading books, mostly about women’s progress, like Max Havelaar by Multatuli.

Then, R.A Kartini decided to study in Netherland. She could get a scholarship from the Dutch government. However, once again her parents didn’t allow her. To prevent her, they asked R.A Kartini to marry the Head of Rembang Regency, Raden Adipati Joyodiningrat. She couldn’t refuse it.

A year later, on September 17, 1904, she gave birth to their first son. Unfortunately, Kartini had to close her eyes forever. She passed away when she was still young, 25 year old

When Kartini still alive, she often sent letters to her Dutch-friends. After she passed away, her letters were collected and published in th form a book entitled Duisternist tot Licht (Habis gelap terbitlah terang)

B During her seclusion, Kartini continied to educate herself on her own. Kartini spoke dutch pen friends. One of them was Rosa Abendanon, a Dutch girl, who became her closest pen friend. Book, newspaper and European magazines fed kartini’s interest I in European Feminist thinking, and fostered her desire to improve the conditions of the native Indonesian women, who at that time had a very low social status.
From her letters, it was clear that Kartini read every thing with a great attention and thoughtfulness. Kartini’s concerns were not just in the area of woman emansipation, but also the struggle for woman to attain their freedom and autonomy, as well as legal recognition of woman’s right as part of a wider movement.
C. R.A Kartini was born in Mayang, a village near Jepara, on April 21, 1879. Jepara is a small town located at the notrhern shore of Middle Java. She was born into Javaness upperclas family, or the priyayi. Her father, Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrot,was Jepara’ Major. Krtini was born into a family with a strong intellectual tradition. She was the fifth child and the oldest daughter in a family of eleven.

D . We celebrate Kartini day on April 21 every year. It was President Soekarno who declared Kartini’s birth date, April 21, as an Indonesian national holiday for women’s movement. Kartini days is celebrated together with Indonesian mother’s day, which is celebrated on December 22.
E. Kartini’s parents arranged her marriage to Raden Adipati Jayadiningrat, the Chief of Rembang Regency. They were married November 12, 1903. Her huban understood Kartini’s passion and alllowed her to establish a school for wowen in the eastern porch of the Rembang Regency office complex. Kartini’s only son was born on September 13,1904. A few days later, Kartini’s died at the age 25. She was buried at the Bulu Village, Rembang.
After Kartini died, Mr.J.H Abendanon collected and published the letters that Kartini had sent to her friends in Europe. The book was titled Out of Dark Comes Light, which was published in 1911.
F. Kartini’s father, RM A.A Sosroningrat, used to be the district Principal of Mayang. Her mother was M.A Ngasirah. During this period, polygamy was a common practice among the nobles. Her father married the second time to Raden Ajeng Woerjan, a direct descendant of the king of Madura. Kartini’ famliy allowed her to attend primary school. After she turned 12, she was secluded at home, a common practice of preparing young girls for marriage.
