  • Today’s Agenda: What Mendeley is and how it helps you as a researcher
  • Lets get started with What Mendeley is
  • Mendeley is:A tool for researchers that helps them work more efficiently with the larger goal of making science more open + transparentThe FREE software is cross platform non browser specificHave desktop, web and mobile accounts Mendeley is a growing network of researchers over 1.5 million users worldwide!
  • Who Mendeley Is?Mendeley was started by three PhD students in 2008Since grown to include offices in London UK, NYC and remote colleagues in California and Canada as well as an advisor program that spans the globe with over 1000+ enthusiasts spreading the word about MendeleyWe are supported by some of the founders of Skype, Last.fm and Warner music group
  • Jumping in we’ll talk about Mendeley’s reference management features first
  • Introducing your Mendeley desktop LibraryOnce downloaded helps you create an organized library of your workThis is what the interface looks like, it is very similar to iTunes like interface. It has 3 panels- menu bar (left), references (middle), reference metadata (right)
  • Adding documentsMendeley makes it easy to add documents in a variety of ways including using the file menu, icons, or simply dragging and dropping a single file or a folder full of filesYou can also sync/integrate with existing other reference management tools like endnote, zotero, + refworks etc. When you add a file Mendeley will automatically extract the file’s metadata *DEMO OPPORTUNITY (see script)
  • Metadata ExtractionWhen you add documents to your library, they don’t always come in perfect BUT you have options on how you can quickly fix them Look up on Google scholar or use a document identifier to lookup the detailsYou can also edit the fields manually at any stage if you need to
  • Web-ImporterPull in content easily online with our Mendeley web importerTo install the book-marklet simply drag the button into your browsers book mark bar

  • Syncing your librariesMendeley Desktop and Mendeley web update each other and pass information and changes you make in either account when you hit syncSo when you use the web-importer and add to your web library you will have to sync with the desktop client in order to view it in Mendeley desktopThe process of syncing is what differentiates Mendeley from other reference management tools (why? Anonymously aggregates data fromall users in the network and makes use of this- discovery engine + API)*DEMO OPPORTUNITY
