PARTS OF SPEECH : VERB
Objectives
 Students will be able to define and identify different types of verbs.
 Students will be able to demonstrate correct usage of different verbs,
including past and present tense verbs and helping verbs.
Suggested Grades: 2nd Grade - 3rd Grade - 4th Grade
VERBS LESSON PLAN
Materials
 Verbs Lesson - Use the worksheets for your lesson plan, or
use student version as lesson supplement.
 Verbs Worksheets - Printable teaching verbs worksheets.
Procedure
Teachers -- write these sentences on the board, and then have the
students try to figure out the action words.
Definition: A verb is an action word. A verb tells what the subject
does, is, or what happens to it. (Ask: what is subject doing?
Answer: a verb.)
Example 1
"Kayla smiled at the teacher."
smiled - tells what the subject (Kayla) did
Example 2
"Sam listens to the teacher."
listens - tells what subject (Sam) is doing.
Example 3
"Maria was lost in the woods."
was lost - tells what happens to subject (Maria).
Teachers -- to reinforce understanding of basic verb identification,
have students write their own sentences on the board and pick out
the noun (previous lessons) and verb in each sentence.
Many sentences have more than one verb. Can you find three verbs
in this sentence?
"Kyle runs with the football and shouts to his teammates while he
plays outside."
Helping Verbs
Some words help express action. These are called helping verbs:
is swimming have brought was running was going
does ride will throw had broken has carried
Teachers -- these are verbs that are difficult to identify and correctly
use. Tell students to pay special attention to these types of verbs.
Verb Tense
Present Tense: verb shows what is happening now.
Ex. Trina reads a book.
Past Tense: a verb showing that something already happened.
Ex. Trina read a book.
