Potential Energy Lesson - Presentation Transcript

  1. November 1
    • Remember: Make up CFU and HW log. Opportunity for movie on Thursday.
    • Objective:
      • There is a link between work and energy
      • Potential energy is stored energy
    • A-Team:
    • Homework: Chemical Potential Energy Wksht
    • Catalyst: Is work being done as your fill out your DWO?
  2. Five minutes flies by…
    • (Have you checked out the online extras?)
    • (EC: Box of Tissues still available)
    • (EC Project due Nov 13)
    • (Unit Test Nov 21)
  3. Catalyst
    • Q: Is work being done as your fill out your DWO?
    • A: Yes. There is a force being applied in the same direction as the distance.
  4. Work and Energy
    • On the blue sheet, write a sentence using work
    • On the green sheet, write a sentence using energy
    • One per table
  5. Energy
    • Energy is the ability to do work
    • The unit of energy is joules (J)
    • When you do work on an object, you transfer energy to that object.
    • Whenever work is done, energy is transformed or transferred to another system.
    • Because energy is a measure of the ability to do work, energy and work are expressed in the same units.
    What: Why:
  6. Energy
    • Energy can be found in many forms
      • Potential
      • Kinetic
      • Mechanical
  7. Potential Energy
    • Potential energy is energy due to position, shape or condition
    • Potential energy is stored energy
  8. Gravitational Potential Energy
    • Results from the force of gravity
    • Formula
      • PE grav = mass x free fall acceleration x height
      • PE grav = mgh
      • Units:
        • m = kg
        • g = 9.8 m/s 2
        • h = meters
    • Think: It’s going to have the potential to fall because of gravity
    Weight = mg
  9. Gravitational Potential Energy
  10. Elastic Potential Energy
    • Elastic potential energy is the energy stored when something is stretched or compressed
    • Think: Rubber band that is stretched will pop back into place
  11. Elastic Potential Energy
  12. Create!
    • Make a flip book that illustrates a ball being dropped from some height, hitting the ground, and bouncing at least once
    • Label and Show these:
      • Gravitational Potential Energy
      • The height
      • Elastic Potential
      • Compression
