• 1. Day 5: Sept 5/8

Objective: SWBAT apply the scientific method

Homework: Pages 14 and 16

Warm up: Make 2 quantitative and 2 qualitative observations

 • 2. Setting up Page 15 for notes

Put “Scientific Method” as heading

Skip two lines

Draw a horizontal line

Skip SIX lines

Draw a horizontal line

Repeat steps 4-5 five more times (total of seven lines)

 • 3. Page 15 set up (cont’d) Day: D All: A Plant: P Farmers: F Great: G Six: S
 • 4. SCIENTIFIC METHOD

This is a series of steps that scientists use answer questions and solve problems

 • 5. SCIENTIFIC METHOD

SIX

GREAT

FARMERS

PLANT

ALL

DAY

 • 6. Six: State the Problem

Identify the question or subject to study

 • 7. Great: Gather Information

Research the subject.

Places to do research: library, internet, encyclopedia, television, etc.

 • 8. Farmers: Form Hypothesis

The educated guess or best guess about what will happen in the experiment.

Usually has the words “If... Then”

IF I eat 23 hot dogs, THEN I will get sick

 • 9. Plant: Perform Experiment

Develop a way to test the hypothesis

Independent Variable : part of the experiment that can be changed or controlled

Dependent Variable : What is measured in the experiment

Controls : A group where nothing is tested

Constants : Things that are held the same

 • 10. All: Analyze Data

Compile data into charts and graphs

This helps make sense of the information taken from the experiment

 • 11. Day: Draw Conclusions

Decides whether the original hypothesis was correct.

If the answer is “ YES ” then you are done

If the answer is “ NO ” then a new hypothesis is made and you repeat the experiment

 • 12. Page 14 assignment

Make a sequence thinking map for SGFPAD with a picture for each step!

END
 • 13. Time to glue!

Flip chart “More SGFPAD Practice to 16”

Glue “Scenario” sheet to 17

 • 14. Guided Practice page 17

Underneath the scenario, write out the steps of the scientific method, skipping a few lines in between each

State the problem:

Gather information:

 • 15. With table partner

Work to identify the different parts of the scientific method.

You will have 6 min 47 seconds before we come back whole group. Each group member needs to be ready to present!!

 • 16. Go over scenario

SP: Do any of the keys work on the elevator?

GI: Elevator repair person was there; keys are the correct size

FH: At least one of the keys should operate the elevator

 • 17. Scenario

PE: Test each key

DV: Does the elevator open

IV: the key used

AD: Two of the ten keys turned on the elevator

DC: Hypothesis was correct because two keys worked and Albi predicted at least one would work

 • 18. A Mystery Song…

Raise your hand if you know what this song is.

 • 19. The Scientific Method Song Produced by Master “G” with Nelly and the St. Lunatics
 • 20. While we’re in the studio

TIME IS MONEY

MONEY IS TIME

 • 21. Scientific Method Song - 1st Verse (To the tune of Ride Wit’ Me - Nelly) If you got a question needs an answer you see, Gotta gather information in the library Oh why must I do it this way? MUST BE THE METHOD!
 • 22. Scientific Method Song - 2nd Verse First hypothesize what the answer could be, Then perform an experiment 1-2-3 Oh why must I do it this way? MUST BE THE METHOD!
 • 23. Scientific Method Song - 3rd Verse Then record the data in the data sheet, Draw up some conclusions and then repeat Oh why must I do it this way? MUST BE THE METHOD!
