Don't build someone else's equity. Use Josh.com/?d=Twitter styled links.

URL Shorteners
Use whoever you like, but make sure they 301 redirect, not 302.
Bit.ly works exceptionally well.
Append + to see statistics for Bit.ly links including conversations, Facebook Shares, et al
Works for other peoples links.
Use Bit.ly custom to work keywords in if possible.

URL Shorteners
Why not use your own site as a URL Shortener?
Wordpress has worked in built in functionality for short[er] links.
Buy a condensed .me or .co domain and use it to tweet links.
301 Redirect.
Once a URL has been used, 301 it out elsewhere.

How To Use Short URLs
Go around your site and make a list of “social opportunities.”
“Social opportunities” are not 30 social media buttons.

Incentivize. “Show us you made a tweet about us and get 30% off” (Another great outsource project)
Every site has social opportunities, be creative.
Use Google Analytics URL Builder for tracking.

Affiliate Programs
Many aff programs fail to build link equity effectively.
Considering using GET variables. http://Josh.com/?product=123&aff=45
Amazon is excellent at this.
Aff's drive customers to your site, they take advantage of social opportunities, which drives more customers.
Good social media campaigns will compound traffic and customers.

Other Programs
What really is 4Square?
Create artificial status.
Photo galleries, “Check ins”, activities, scavenger hunts.
Leverage the “Gotta catch them all!” mentality.
Use artificial status to create social opportunities. Forum referrals, badges, points, tweets, etc
On site opportunity as well, “40 People Thanked Josh For This Post”

Twitter Best Practices
Profile Link
Always try to use a real URL
Without your own shortener stick to custom bit.ly
Try to match ratios of “influential profiles”.
Retweet good links, hope others follow suit.
Build a nice link profile for your Twitter page.
Use Hash # tags to get aggregated.
