  • Let’s Eat Healthy! Nutrition Miss Anna Turner 2 nd Grade
    • The purpose of this newsletter is to give you details on a project we will be performing over the next few weeks on nutrition.
  • Essential Question: How can eating healthy change our lives?
    • Summary
      • Students will be divided into 6 groups, each group covering and researching one of the 6 food groups
      • Students will learn about the importance of eating healthy
      • The groups will present the information they researched and the information will then be used to develop a new school lunch menu

    • Helps students learn how to eat healthier
    • Students will know more about common foods they eat
    • It will provide a new eating plan for students as well as their families
    • For 2 nd Grade:
    • 7) Identify activities that encourage healthy behavior
    • 11) Identify the number of daily required servings from each of the six groups on the food guide pyramid

  • Objectives
    • Students will have an understanding of the food guide pyramid and it’s importance to them as an individual.
    • Students will be able to compare and contrast healthy food choices versus unhealthy food choices.
    • Students will use a variety of resources to research and record information about the six food groups.
    • Students will develop a new dietary plan for the school and present it to the school body.
  • Unit Questions Content Questions
    • What things can a person do to change their eating habits?
    • What should be taken into consideration when making a healthy menu?
    • What are the six food groups on the food guide pyramid?
    • What group should a person eat the less of?
    • What group should a person eat the most of?
  • Teacher’s Role
    • As the teacher, I will introduce the unit by discussing the essential question.
    • I will hold group conference to observe the group’s progress and to answer questions they might have.
    • I will be available so that students can ask questions when needed.
    • I will continually monitor the groups to ensure the students are doing their work.
  • Student’s Role
    • Student’s will determine who will take on which role in their individual groups.
    • Students will determine a plan to ensure that all of their assignments are turned in on time.
    • Students will research and record information into their journals.
  • Parent’s Roles
    • Help students with homework that may be assigned
    • Be able to supply any materials that are needed
    • Check the student’s daily take home folder
    • Attend the final presentations, if possible

    • Students work in groups in which they learn to be flexible
    • Students research new information and organize it
    • Students develop 21 st century skills
    • Students learn time management
