  2. 2. <ul><li>The purpose of this newsletter is to give you details on a project we will be performing over the next few weeks on nutrition. </li></ul>

Essential Question: How can eating healthy change our lives? <ul><li>Summary </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will be divided into 6 groups, each group covering and researching one of the 6 food groups </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will learn about the importance of eating healthy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The groups will present the information they researched and the information will then be used to develop a new school lunch menu </li></ul></ul>

Benefits Alabama Standards <ul><li>Helps students learn how to eat healthier </li></ul><ul><li>Students will know more about common foods they eat </li></ul><ul><li>It will provide a new eating plan for students as well as their families </li></ul><ul><li>For 2 nd Grade: </li></ul><ul><li>7) Identify activities that encourage healthy behavior </li></ul><ul><li>11) Identify the number of daily required servings from each of the six groups on the food guide pyramid </li></ul>

Objectives <ul><li>Students will have an understanding of the food guide pyramid and it’s importance to them as an individual. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will be able to compare and contrast healthy food choices versus unhealthy food choices. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will use a variety of resources to research and record information about the six food groups. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will develop a new dietary plan for the school and present it to the school body. </li></ul>

Unit Questions Content Questions <ul><li>What things can a person do to change their eating habits? </li></ul><ul><li>What should be taken into consideration when making a healthy menu? </li></ul><ul><li>What are the six food groups on the food guide pyramid? </li></ul><ul><li>What group should a person eat the less of? </li></ul><ul><li>What group should a person eat the most of? </li></ul>

Teacher’s Role <ul><li>As the teacher, I will introduce the unit by discussing the essential question. </li></ul><ul><li>I will hold group conference to observe the group’s progress and to answer questions they might have. </li></ul><ul><li>I will be available so that students can ask questions when needed. </li></ul><ul><li>I will continually monitor the groups to ensure the students are doing their work. </li></ul>

Student’s Role <ul><li>Student’s will determine who will take on which role in their individual groups. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will determine a plan to ensure that all of their assignments are turned in on time. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will research and record information into their journals. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Parent’s Roles <ul><li>Help students with homework that may be assigned </li></ul><ul><li>Be able to supply any materials that are needed </li></ul><ul><li>Check the student’s daily take home folder </li></ul><ul><li>Attend the final presentations, if possible </li></ul>

What is Project-Based Learning and how is it used in the classroom? <ul><li>Students work in groups in which they learn to be flexible </li></ul><ul><li>Students research new information and organize it </li></ul><ul><li>Students develop 21 st century skills </li></ul><ul><li>Students learn time management </li></ul>
