Main principles for regional development strategy Economic view: Assessment of territory’s resources and identification of advantages Identification of economic specialization - perspective business areas Investments that provide returns in medium term Spatially and thematically integrated view: Spatial dimension (including cooperation with surrounding areas) Thematic dimension (coordination of sectors) Dimension of time (successive actions) Strategic vision: Prioritization Action plan Monitoring and evaluation mechanism Political leadership and administrative management: Management and organization of process Public participation Identification of opinion leaders and activists
  • 5.  Favorable preconditions for cross-border co-operation in renewable energy,agricultural products, tourism, ecologic safety etc. Favorable climatic conditions and unique land resources for agriculturaldevelopment Well-developed industrial sectors (food industry, sugar production,engineering, textiles, etc.) Varied transport infrastructure - roads connecting settlements, railways,airports and border crossings with Ukraine and Romania, export/import Higher and professional education opportunities according to labor marketrequirements Renewable energy sources (wind, solar energy, biomass) Tourism resources (protected areas, water resources, architecture and healthresources) Entrepreneurship infrastructure - free economic zones and industrial parksDevelopment potential of region North
  • 6.  Depopulation – migration of working age population(unemployment, low wage level), emptying of rural areas,negative natural growth, low proportion of youth Unbalanced development of infrastructure - quality of roads,provision of drinking water, waste management, sanitation,communication, heating, etc. Dependence on external energy sources and prices Lack of financial resources for implementation of priorityprojects Low competitiveness of industrial and agricultural products,limited market opportunities (low purchasing power in thedomestic market) Reduction of workers employed in agricultureChallenges of North region development

Development perspectives of Region North Development of entrepreneurship based on the industrial potential and natural resources (including eco food production) innovative technologies, modernization of the agricultural complexes increase competitiveness of enterprises and innovation commercialization small business development (especially in rural areas) Urban areas as driving force of region development business infrastructure and services, communications - roads, sewage Investing in education, skills and lifelong learning establishing complex business motivation, orientation and financial support for young people,implementation of youth iniciatives improvement of lifelong learning, preparation of skilled and motivated professionals Development of regional infrastructure improving railway and road infrastructure providing for national and regional accessibility of growthcenters promoting regional mobility towards growth centers by developing public transport services improving intra-regional and external accessibility Protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency green energy development ​ waste disposal, water purification, preservation of natural resources and cultural heritage values research and development of wastewater treatment systems
