    del.icio.us tutorial - Presentation Transcript

    1. Del.icio.us Manual for shared bookmarking
    2. What is Del.icio.us? Del.icio.us is a tool which allows you to store your bookmarks (Favourites) online. They are accessible from any computer and consequently can be accessed and added to by multiple users. Del.icio.us replaces Favourites / bookmarks
    3. Getting started To begin you need to add the Del.iciou.us buttons to your browser. For Internet Explorer go here: http://del.icio.us/help/ie/extension For Firefox go here: http://del.icio.us/help/firefox/extension This will give you two buttons which look like this:
    4. Logging in Clicking on will take you to the home page. At the top right click “Login” Username: Competitiveness Password: cluster Click “login” (Don’t try to register a new account, you are simply logging in to an existing one)
    5. Using Del.icio.us Once logged in, the Competitiveness links can be accessed by clicking .
    6. Saving a link To store a link click . This will bring up the following screen*: *if you use a popup blocker you may need to adjust your settings to allow popups from Del.icio.us.
    7. Saving a link ‘ description’ is filled in automatically, if you wish to add anything, then use ‘notes’. ‘ tags’ allows you to apply a number of labels to the link. In this instance the page belongs to a water treatment company which works for both the municipal and industrial sectors, it is a member of the cluster and related to the ENG-YOF-ENV project. It has been tagged accordingly. (more on tags later)
    8. Viewing a link The link now appears at the top of Competitiveness’ page:
    9. Searching with Tags A list of tags can be found on the right of the screen. You can then click on each of the tags to bring up all of the relevant links. For example, to view all of the sites related to eng-yof-env who serve the industrial sector, first click ‘eng-yof-env’, bringing up a list of all sites with this tag. Then in ‘related tags’ click the ‘+’ before industrial. This will bring all of the sites which are tagged both ‘eng-yof-env’ and ‘industrial’
    10. Tagging conventions
      • In order to use Del.icio.us collaboratively it is essential that users use the same tags, avoiding duplicates: if one uses the label ‘industry’ while another writes ‘industrial’ then the links will not be easy to search.
      • Del.icio.us helps regulate Tags in two ways.
      • It lists ‘recommended tags’. These are tags which have been used by Competitiveness which seem to fit.
      • As you begin to type, it offers suggestions from previous tags.
    11. Tagging conventions Avoid duplicates - One simple method of avoiding duplicates is to avoid capital letters . This removes the easy trap of creating two tags, ‘Industrial’ and ‘industrial’. Always include the project code e.g. eng-yof-env. This will avoid confusion in the long run!
    12. Privacy Information stored on Del.ico.us could be found (but not edited) by someone from outside of Competitiveness. If you do not want outsiders to view your link, or read your notes, tick the ‘do not share’ box. The link is now stored privately, only visible to Competitiveness .
    13. One more thing… Don’t click ‘logout’. This will logout all Competitiveness users at once!
