  3. 3. Project Proposal • Walton airport was the main airport of lahore but its handling capacity is less however, Walton was unable to handle the large aircraft • Over the course of the next 25 years the demand for air travel rose • government decided to build a new world class airport to meet the growing needs for the future and improve the facilities for passengers named as Allama Iqbal International
  4. 4. Flights • All flights will be switched to the new airport and the old airport will be passed onto the military. However, during the Hajj period, the old airport will be used as the Hajj Terminal by the national carrier, PIA.
  5. 5. Project Description: • Site Location • It is located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. The airport currently has three terminals; the Allama Iqbal terminal, the Hajj terminal, and a cargo terminal. The airport is located about 15 kilometres from the centre of the city. • Its coordinates are 31ᴼ31’17”N, 74ᴼ24’09”E.
  6. 6. Project Management • Client Client of Allama Iqbal International airport is Civil Aviation Authority Pakistan • Cost of the project estimated to be in the region of $200m • Consultant NESPAK + Nayyar Ali Dada + Other Architects • Contractor
  7. 7. Allama Iqbal International Airport facilities • Flights • Terminals • Bridges • Passenger’s Facilities • Passenger terminal complex Airport maintenance facilities • Passenger Accomondation • Runways • Commercial Important Person Lounge • Lahore air cargo and transport
  8. 8. Proposed development Walkways Passenger drop off Primary check in Ticket counter Secondary security check in Departure lounge Airline lounge Arrivals route Baggage claim hall Customs Parking
  9. 9. Screening • Pakistan environmental protection authority (PEPA), require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), for every major project in Pakistan having Physical, Biological, social and economical impacts
  10. 10. Scooping • Land environment impacts • Water environmental impacts • Air environmental impact • Noise environmental impact • Biological environmental impact • Socio-Economic environmental impact • Solid waste
  11. 11. Land environment impacts Activity • Earth work construction • Fuel storage and handling: Impacts • Loss of vegetation • Change in elevation of the area • Drainage Patterns • Land and air pollution
  12. 12. Water environmental impacts Activity • Aircraft and vehicle washing • Toilets, laundries, cleaning fluids Impacts • Water pollution • Land pollution • Cause health problems
  13. 13. Air environmental impact Activity • Aircraft emissions • Emissions from surface vehicles Impacts • The maximum incremental Ground Level Concentrations (GLCs) due to the airport project for PM, SO2, NOx, CO and HC • Pm, SO2, NOx, CO, HC emissions to air, which cause health hazards
  14. 14. Noise environmental impacts Activity • Construction noise • Aircraft noise & Ground noise Impacts • Noise pollution • Effects hearing and nerves system • Noise pollution • Effects hearing and nerves system
  15. 15. Waste management impacts Activity In-flight wastes Scrap wastes Catering wastes Aircraft maintenance wastes Impacts Water pollution Land pollution Land pollution by hard metals Water pollution
  16. 16. Socio-Economic environmental impacts Activity • Development project • Vehicle emission Impacts • loss of cultural heritage , economic and commercial value of its surrounding land • Ambient air
  17. 17. Mitigation measure • Land Environment • containment of any surface spillage monitored • Aircraft maintenance, sensitivity of the location where activities are undertaken, and control of runoff of potential contaminants, chemicals etc. are to be properly implemented and reported. • Proper drainage systems • emergency containment in the event of a major spill during monsoon season etc. are to be provided.
  18. 18. Water environment • Storm water drains are to be built for discharging storm water from the air-field to avoid flooding /water logging in project area during monsoon season / cloud bursts
  19. 19. Air Environment • Continuous Descent Approach and low power- low drop techniques, • Design the airports to minimize aircraft holding and taxiing times • Avoid Aircraft line up on the ground, • Avoiding unnecessary use of aircraft secondary power units, • Taxiing management (e.g. towing and single engine taxi), • Increasing the use of public transport, • The use of electric vehicles or less polluting fuels
  20. 20. Noise Environment • The noise preferential routes which the aircraft overfly the least populated areas after takeoff and before landing are to be suggested. • Night flying policy to limit the number of flights and amount of noise generated during this most sensitive time is to be formulated • Mitigation measures could also include introduction of higher landing fees for noisy aircraft and for night landing in threshold cases could be considered.
  21. 21. Waste Management • The wastes have to be managed after segregation and identifying the method of management. Recycling of wastes such as paper, glass carried out. •
  22. 22. Socio-Economic Environment • Air pollution control measures are to be adopted. Noise control measures such as noise absorbing building material in closed buildings, noise barriers in Ground run bays, are to be insured • Health camps both for employees and local populations are to be conducted.
