Transcript of "Environmental pollution"

  1. 1. POLLUTION CONTROL ANDDISASTER MANAGEMENT
  2. 2. Environmental Pollution Environmental pollution is anydischarge of material or energyinto water, land, or air thatcauses or may cause acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term)detriment to the Earthsecological balance or that lowersthe quality of life.
  3. 3. Types of pollution which affectthe environment are:Air pollution.Water pollutionNoise pollutionSoil pollutionMarine pollutionThermal pollutionRadiation pollution.
  4. 4. AIR POLLUTIONContamination of air by smoke andharmful gases, mainly oxides ofcarbon, sulfur, and nitrogen.Basically these gaseous substancestend to interfere with human comfort, welfare and causes environmentaldamage. Air pollution causes acidrain, ozone depletion, photochemicalsmog and other such phenomenon.
  5. 5. CAUSESNATURAL CAUSES MAN MADE -CAUSES CYCLONES VOLCANICERUPTIONS EARTH QUAKES INDUSTRIAL WASTE AUTOMOBILES THERMAL POWERSTATION NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS NUCLEAR POWERPLANTS AGRICULTURALACTIVITIES DISPOSAL OFGARBAGE.
  6. 6. EFFECTS
  7. 7. PLANTS• Affects the movement of the stomata• Photosynthesis• Growth of the plant.• Too much exposure to sulphur dioxide causesbleaching of the leaf pigment.• High concentration of carbon monoxide leadsto premature falling of leaves, curling, etc.
  8. 8. CLIMATEGREEN HOUSE EFFECTGLOBAL WARMINGACID RAINDEPLETION OF OZONELAYER.
  9. 9. CONTROLPUBLIC AWARENESSINDUSTRIAL GASES SHOULD BETREATED BEFORE DISCHARGE INTHE ATMOSPHEREUSE OF ENVIRONMENTALFRIENDLY FUELS, SUCH AS GOBARGAS, LPG, NATURAL GAS,ETCRAISING OF GREEN BELTSSHOULD BE PROMOTED.
  10. 10. WATER POLLUTION• THE CONTAMINATION OF WATERWITH UNDESIRABLE SUBSTANCESWHICH MAKE IT UNFIT FORUSAGE IS TERMED AS WATERPOLLUTION.
  11. 11. CAUSESNATURAL CAUSES MAN MADE CAUSES SOIL EROSION DEPOSITION OFDEAD ANDDECAYING REMAINSOF PLANTS ANDANIMALS. HIGH SPEED WINDS FLOODS. SEWAGE DISPOSAL INDUSTRIAL WASTE AGRICULTURALWASTE HUMAN ACTIVITIES CUSTOMS ANDTRADITIONS. OIL SPILLS

  13. 13. Cleaningup the OilSpill!
  14. 14. HUMAN HEALTH CAUSES VARIOUS DISEASES TO THE CENTRALNERVOUS SYSTEM CAUSES DAMAGE TO LIVER , BRAIN ANDKIDNEY. IT CAUSES VARIOUS DISEASES LIKEDIARRHOEA, ABDOMINAL PAINS, SKIN RASH,JAUNDICE, FEVER, ENLARGED LIVER,ETC. TO AN EXTENT IT MAY ALSO CAUSE DEATH.
  15. 15. PLANTS EXCESSIVE USE OF FERTILIZERS ON CROPS MAYCAUSE SOME AMOUNT TO BE RETAINED IN THESOIL WHICH IS WASHED AWAY DURING RAINS ANDREACHES THE NEAREST WATER BODY. EXCESS AMOUNT OF NITRATE PRESENT IN WATERCAUSES THE GROWTH OF UNWANTED PLANTS. CAUSES EUTROPHICATION. UNWANTED PLANTS REDUCE THE OXYGEN SUPPLYTO OTHER AQUATIC PLANTS. POLLUTED WATER ALSO CONTAINS HIGHCONCENTRATION OF METALS WHICH MAY BETOXIC FOR PLANTS AND HAMPERS THEIRGROWTH.
  16. 16. ANIMALS AQUATIC ANIMALS ARE DIRECTLYAFFECTED BY WATER POLLUTION. THE HARMFUL CHEMICALS MAKES THESURVIVAL OF THE AQUATIC ANIMALS VERYDIFFICULT. DUE TO THIS A LARGE NUMBER OFAQUATIC SPECIES HAVE BECOME EXTINCT. DRINKING POLLUTED WATER COULD BEVERY POISONIOUS AND MAY CAUSE SEVERDISEASES AND ALSO DEATH.
  17. 17. CONTROL INDUSTRIAL WASTE SHOULD BE TREATED INORDER TO REDUCE TOXICITY. NON BIODEGRADABLE WASTE MATERIALSHOULD NOT BE DUMPED. HUMAN ACTIVITIES SUCH BATHING, WASHINGIN RIVERS, THROWING CARCASSES ANDIMMERSING IDOLS SHOULD BE STOPPED. PUBLIC AWARNESS.
