Herbs and spices have been used in maintaining and enhancing human beauty since times immemorial. Indian women have long used herbs – sandalwood and turmeric for example, for skin care. Henna was used for hair color, and as decoration for palms and feet on festive occasions. People also used natural oils to perfume their bodies. Recently the efficacy of herbs in cosmetic production has been revived and extensive research has been done on personal care products. The demand for herbal cosmetics is high as these products use natural ingredients, and for the fact that they avoid side effects which are a common occurrence in synthetic products. Cosmetics are used for beautification. The usage of synthetic products is harmful to our skins and extended usage also affects our environment. In recent times there is heightened awareness about going green to protect the environment. Hence the inclination is towards using products with natural ingredients. Synthetics on skin may have various adverse effects in the form of acute toxicity, percutaneous absorption, skin irritation, eye irritation, skin sensitization, photosensitization, mutagenicity and phototoxicity.
