    • Small Business
      • The owner will perform the role of the chief executive and will be responsible for the various facets of the strategic management process.
    • Business Grows
      • The strategic management role will be assigned to a number of managers at different levels.
    • Large Organization
      • Top managers assume responsibility for the entire process with middle management concerned with the implementation of programmers to successfully achieve the strategy objectives.
    • Multi-Divisional Business
      • It is possible to identity three levels of strategy: corporate strategy, business strategy and functional strategy.  Figure 1.

    • Consider the organization as a whole and identifies the most favorable portfolio of businesses for the firm to be engaged in.
    • Concern with the identification of objectives for the organization and the best way that these may be achieved in terms of the strategic orientation of the company.
    • Focuses on how to compete in a given business, determines the competitive approach of companies which have a single product or the strategies for each strategic business unit of a multi-product organization.

    • The main aim of functional strategy is to obtain the maximum productivity from resources.
    • Concern with process of implementing business strategies.

    • Objectives are the long term that an organization seek to achieve in pursuing its basic mission.
    • A common view is that objectives should be:
      • Measurable: so it will be possible to know whether or not the organization has achieved the objective.
      • Communicable: so all concerned know what they are.
      • Realistic: in terms of what the environment
