A Brief History about Videogames

It all started in the 1970s, introduced as a commercial entertainment medium, videogames created an important entertainment industry for Japan, Europe and the United States. Gradually growing over two decades, videogames developed into a 10 billion dollar industry competing with the motion picture industry as the most profitable entertainment industry in the world.

Gaming Genres Videogames are categorized into different genres based on their game play interaction. Much like the movie industry, games hold a rating criteria for age, based on certain genres. While some genres are more popular than others, for example sports games have a higher popularity percent than strategy games, gaming developers continue to create a variety of styles to accommodate everyone's’ preference. *5 *7

Male and Female Gamers A recent survey conducted by the Ipsos MediaCT for the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) discovered that 40% of gamers are female and the average age of a gamer is 35 years old. Women over 18 make up a larger percentage of gamers than boys under 17 (33% to 18%). Other results indicated that 65% of US households play videogames and 38% of US households own a videogame console system.

Game Developers So what or who are videogame developers? A videogame developer is a business or an individual software developer that creates games. Certain developers focus on specializing games for rivalry game system companies such as Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. The developers usually employ a team of programmers, game designers, artists, sound engineers and producers. Once the game is complete it then gets published through the developer. *2 *6 * 4
