  • 2. AbstractMost say there is no single best way to teach terms andphrases. However, the research and theory on vocabularydevelopment does point to a few generalizations that providestrong guidance. The Tennessee Department of EducationDivision of Teaching and Learning recommends six steps inteaching each of the TN Academic Vocabulary terms orconcept.Participants will focus on teaching strategies, based upon therecommended six steps, utilizing original pictures and user-friendly tech tools. Examples created by preservice teacherswill be shared.

  • 5. 6 StepsThe first three steps are to assist the teacher in directinstruction. The last three steps are to provide thelearner practice and reinforcement.
  • 6. Step 1:The teacher will give a description, explanation, orexample of the new term. Access Prior Knowledge: Think, Pair, Share, Double- pair, Class Share Examples and Non-examples Connection: Math Word Meaning - Common Language Usage
  • 7. Step 2:The teacher will ask the learner to give adescription, explanation, or example of the new term inhis/her own words. Concept Cards Words to Symbols/ Symbols to Words Word Whacker Word Wall Activity for Definition Restating
  • 8. Step 3:The teacher will ask the learner to draw a picture,symbol, or locate a graphic to represent the new term. Draw (or Trace) and Label Diagrams/Graphs Illustrations for Vocabulary that Convey Meanings Cartoons or Comic Strips Matching – Concentration
  • 9. Step 4:The learner will participate in activities that providemore knowledge of the words in their vocabularynotebooks. Word Recall The Goal: Good Definitions Relationships between Terms – 3 x 3 Grids Relationship Building – Concept Circles
  • 10. Step 5:The learner will discuss the term with other learners. Think – Pair – Share Word Wall Activities What Doesn’t Belong and Why? Word SortTwo-Way Sort
  • 11. Step 6:The learner will participate in games that provide morereinforcement of the new term. Taboo Words Step UP or Pyramid
