    Cathryn,
Those refinements on the right hand side allow you to limit your search to exactly the format, author, genre, etc. you want for your search topic. Just click on one and keep going until you reach the item you want.
It is easier to start searching very generally in the search box and keep refining on the right hand side (Refine by) Refinements include:
    Locations (branches)
    Nonfiction/fiction
    Electronic books
    Large print
    Audiobooks
AquaBrowser offers a vast array of categories that allow refinements to a search to get exactly what is wanted. Note that next to each category shown is a number - this denotes the exact number of items available.

You can specify targeted searched, using ’keywords’, ’author’, or ’title’: for example, author: 'wong, harry'

Advanced Search is in blue bar at top of page. You can search by most of the same limiters as before (some may have different titles).

I am sorry but I think this new site is awful. I used the old site with great ease. I have been trying to search for works about Thomas Jefferson. According to your search there are 0 works ab out him!!!!

Using Your Library Catalog - Presentation Transcript

  1. Tips for Using Your “New” Library Catalog www.aclib.us
  2. Searching the Catalog
    • www.aclib.us
    • Start Your Search:
    • In the search box on the home page
    • (catalog is default choice):
  3. Refine Your Search: Using the Menu
    • If needed, refine (limit) your search by using the categories to the right of search results.
  4. Refine Your Search: Menu Categories
    • AquaBrowser offers a number of categories that allow you to refine your search results to get exactly what you want. After you have searched your terms, use the Refine menu on the right to pick the exact format , author , subject, language , series , etc.
    • Click on more to see a full list of choices.
    • For example, for Library format, you can search by these choices
  5. Refine Your Search: Using “Advanced Search”
    • Advanced Search is in blue bar at top of page.
  6. Refine Your Search: By Location
    • To view titles only available at your local library branch select the drop down box on the right hand side of the screen. Scroll down the listing and select your local library location. (The default is set to search all Library District locations.
  7. Refine Your Search: Using a Wildcard
    • The asterisk ( * ) is a wildcard, used to truncate a term.
    • unit* lists titles with a word anywhere in the record that starts with unit .
    • subject:unit* lists titles with a word in a subject field that starts with unit (United, Unitas, unit, unity, Unitarian).
  8. Refine Your Search: with AND, OR, NOT
    • AND is the default. A space between search terms is regarded as an AND . A search for geisha memoirs looks for geisha and memoirs in the same cataloging record.
    • OR can be used to look for either term, or both, as in geisha OR memoirs .
    • NOT (or the – symbol) can be used to exclude a keyword. A search for geisha NOT memoirs (or geisha –memoirs ) looks for records containing geisha , excluding those that contain memoirs .
  9. Refine Your Search: Searching Multiple Terms
    • To search for a specific author, precede the name with author: and use quotation marks, as in author:“lisa jackson” or author:“jackson lisa” . The order of the terms is immaterial. Searching without author: and quotes gives results for lisa or jackson used anywhere in the record.
    • It's possible to search multiple authors at once, separated by OR , by typing author:"james patterson" OR author:"lilian braun" OR author:"alice sebold" .
    • You can also use NOT (or the – symbol) to exclude a term. For example, a search for mexico includes titles on Mexico and New Mexico . To exclude New Mexico, type mexico NOT new (or mexico –new ).
  10. Place a Hold
    • We are hoping that we will be able to offer persistent login this summer.
    • In the meantime, if you click on Place Hold you will see Catalog at the top as a link.
  11. Place a Hold continued
    • Click on Catalog; insert your library card number and pin under Login
    • Your library card number will remain logged in as long as you remain in this window.
  12. Discover: Helps You Explore
    • The magic of AquaBrowser Library's discovery principle is the “word cloud“ which appears with the most relevant associations, translations, spelling variations and synonyms. Clicking here broadens your search results
    • On the left side of the screen, you see a cloud of words based on your query. These words are suggestions for you to discover new information and help you in formulating your query.
    • These suggestions consist of translations (to another language), spelling variations (to correct for spelling mistakes or words that can be spelt in more than one way), and associations (free 'brainstorming' associations)
    • Clicking on any of these terms in the word cloud yields a new search combining that term with the original one. The system thereby ranks relevance by this history, finding the combination on top of your list of results. The words you clicked on in the word cloud are shown in a different color, as a trail of suggestions in the word cloud, thus never losing your original term.
    Discover: the Word Cloud
  13. Discover: Word Color Codes
    • • Black words are variations; these terms have something to do with your query, and can help you formulate a direction in your search; click on an association to search for it in the context of your current results.
    • Orange words are spell variations. Sometimes, there are multiple ways to spell a word, or spelling inside the catalog. Click on a variation to see results for it.
    • Gold words are translations; click on a translation to search with your word in another language.
    • Grey words are thesaurus terms; click on a term to search the catalog using that term.
    • Blue words are terms you have already visited. As for the word size: the larger a word, the more relevant it is deemed by the automatic relevancy algorithm. A word's position in the constellation has no direct meaning.
  14. Subject: Lets You Browse
    • If you don’t have a specific title or author you are looking for your can browse our catalog by Subject.
  15. Subject: Lets You Browse
    • Note: The refined search results for “Library Relationships 21” resulted in titles including the call number 372.21
  16. Author: Narrows Your Search
    • If are trying to narrow your search by author you can use the “Author” tab as a shortcut.
  17. Author: Narrows Your Search
    • Example:
    • After clicking the “Author” tab, a list of authors with the term “Library” in the Author’s name appears.
    • Using the list to the left I selected the author: Library: Hennepin County
    • Two search results were found
  18. My Discoveries ®
    • Make the Catalog Your Own With My Discoveries®,you can:
