He was "rediscovered” two centuries later to confirm that he was an undisputed master in the handling of light, textures, perspective and transparent colors. While his production was mostly lost by that reason, some thirty paints has been identified and they has been sufficient to consider him, after Rembrandt, the most valuable painter of the Holland Golden Age.

It was one of the favorites of Vermeer himself, so much so that he never sold it while he lived.   2. During the Nazi invasion, the then owner Count Jaromir Czernin of Austria, sold it to the Führer Adolf Hitler.   3. The painting was recovered in 1946 and delivered to the State of Austria. It is presently exhibited at the National Museum of History of Art of that country.

Snow, a scholar of the works of Vermeer, published about the paint as follows: "Being against this paint we have to engage in a relationship with it so urgent, that one instinctively feels the need to take a step back to reverend."
