Using journal indexes to find materials in International Human Rights Law - Presentation Transcript

    1. Journal indexes for International Human Rights Updated 21 Nov 2008
    2. What are indexes?
      • Online directories of articles, books, papers etc organised by author, title, keyword, case, legislation…
      • Include
        • Author
        • Title
        • Keywords (describing the subjects covered)
        • Cases/legislation cited
        • Full bibliographic details
        • Abstract (sometimes)
        • Do not include full text article
          • but you may get a link to the full text on another database.
    3. Pros and cons
      • Pros
      • Tend to cover a wide range of publications
      • Results are often more relevant than results from full text services
      • Cons
      • Have to find the full text elsewhere
    4. 4 key indexes:
      • Legal Journals Index (on Westlaw).
        • published in the UK and Europe
        • on common law jurisdictions and international law
      • Index to Legal Periodicals
        • Anglo-American legal literature
        • Mainly common law jurisdictions and international law
      • Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals
        • Non Anglo-American legal literature
      • Social Science Index
        • Social and behavioural sciences
        • Huge index going back to 1970 and updated daily
        • Includes abstracts and links to full text when available
    5. Legal Journals Index on Westlaw
      • Journals published in UK /EU
      • But include articles that discuss jurisdictions beyond Europe
      • 1986-
      • Includes links to full text IF the full text is available on Westlaw
      • Use Oxford University eJournals to find full text of articles not available on Westlaw
    6. Choose Journals The search box on the Westlaw homepage searches all UK and EU materials including cases, legislation, journals, commentary. It returns lots or results. Generally it is better to choose on the specialist search screens (e.g. Journals) rather than using this box.
    7. Choose “Advanced Search” for a wider range of search options
    8. Searches the journal abstract, keywords, author and title – useful for subject searching Searches for articles discussing a particular case (including articles discussing cases from international courts & tribunals) Searches for articles discussing legislation (including international conventions) Searches keywords in the Westlaw thesaurus. Difficult to use until you know which keywords Westlaw uses.
      • Combine words using:
      • AND (results must include all words)
      • /s (must include all terms within same sentence),
      • OR (must include one term or the other or both – use for synonyms)
      • “ search for a phrase” (must include exact phrase e.g. “human rights”)
      • ! finds alternative word endings e.g. Africa! finds Africa, African, Africa’s etc
      • * replaces one letter e.g. wom*n finds woman, women
      • e.g. In this example results must include the words Africa (or alternative word endings African etc) in the same sentence as the word woman or women and in the same sentence as the phrase human rights)
    9. Use to narrow your search by adding search terms Link to Abstract Link to full text. If there is not a link to the full text use Oxford University eJournals to find full text on another database Note down any useful keywords. Later use these in the “subject/keyword” fields from the search screen.
    10. Example of an Abstract
    11. e.g. searching for articles discussing Bosnia and Herzegovina v Yugoslavia
    12. e.g. searching for articles discussing the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
    13. Index to Legal Periodicals (Wilson web)
      • Two indexes: 1918-1981, 1981-present
      • Anglo-American but includes articles on International law
      • Which field?
      • Smart Search - searches title, subject, keywords, author, journal title – good for subject searching
      • Court cases – finds articles discussing particular cases (includes international courts and tribunals and domestic courts)
      • Statute – finds articles discussing legislation (but does not include treaties and international agreements)
Tick the databases you want to search
    14. “ Find it @ Oxford” - links to full text where available Title links to full bibliographic details, keywords etc List of subject headings allows you to find other relevant articles Mortar board = peer reviewed Receiv00e new articles meeting your criteria by RSS or email alert To print, e-mail, save, export – tick relevant records first Options to search within results
    15. 1. Click “Find it @ Oxford” to locate full text 2. The dialogue shows it is available on HeinOnline. To connect to click on the link 3. “Find it at Oxford” takes you to the correct journal but not to the article. Find the article by choosing the correct volume and page number (this information is in the citation) Look out for the “Find it @ Oxford” link when using databases and Google Scholar – it will link you to full text when available
    16. Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals
      • Non-Anglo-American law (e.g. public & private international law; Islamic; socialist)
      • 1985 onwards
      • Shares the “Ovid” interface with other databases
    17.
    18.
      • Basic search
      • Searches title, keywords etc
      • Connectors (AND, OR) only work to a limited extent
      • “ Search fields”, “Advanced” and “Multi-field”
      • You must enter connectors (AND, OR, ADJ) between search terms or the search engine will return all items including one or more of your search terms
      • Fields search – best to choose “All fields” particularly as Multi-field search has no option for searching in article title
    19. e.g. using ADJ connector death ADJ2 penalty ADJ2 = terms must appear within 2 words of one another (can use any number) Use AND / OR drop downs to combine Usually best to choose “All Fields” as otherwise can’t search in article title
    20. Full bibliographic details Find full text in Oxford subscriptions Not very useful. Only searches Ovid for citing articles (and OVID does not have any law journals which give citing information). For cited by information use Social Science Citation Index instead Narrow search by journal. Sometimes also get option to narrow by subject / author. Narrow options search within your existing results Email, print, save…
    21. Social Science Citation Index Part of Web of Knowledge and Web of Science
    22. Web of Science - allows you to restrict your search to “Social Sciences”. This excludes Science and Arts articles Searches the whole of Web of Knowledge – returns lots of science articles as well as Social Science.
    23. To restrict your search by date or to Social Sciences
    24. To search by subject choose “Topic” from the drop down. Other options include Author, Title, publication, etc Enter your search terms using connectors between them: OR – one term or the other (synonyms) AND – both terms SAME – both terms in the same sentence “ “ - phrase Restrict your search to Social Sciences Searching
    25. Sort by date, times cited etc Title links to more information including keywords, abstract, bibliography and citing articles Checks to see if full text is available online Bibliographic details – you will need these to find the full article in print. Number of articles which have cited this article Refine options: Narrow your results by entering more keywords or by choosing results from a particular subject etc Your results: sorting, refining, viewing
    26. To print, e-mail or save items check the boxes and then use “Print”, “E-mail”, “Add to marked list” options. Add to marked list option is good if you want to make several searches and collect up references as you go. At the end choose “Marked list” and then print / email etc. Printing and emailing your results
    27. Viewing more information: abstract, cited by, references Later articles which have cited this article Bibliography of the article
