  2. 2. What is Stress? <ul><li>Stress is a state of tension experienced by individuals facing extraordinary demands, constraints or opportunities. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Faces of Stress <ul><li>>Constructive Stress </li></ul><ul><li>- A positive manner for individual n </li></ul><ul><li>Organization. </li></ul><ul><li>>Destructive Stress </li></ul><ul><li>-Which is not healthy for individual </li></ul><ul><li>And/or organization. </li></ul>

Organizational Factors <ul><li>Occupational Demand – in the form of time pressure, too many meetings specially at higher levels. </li></ul><ul><li>Role conflict – a general set of guidelines indicating how persons holding certain positions should or ought to behave. </li></ul><ul><li>Role overload – Ex. An executive who is attempting to dictate a letter, talk on three phones, conducting an interview n writing a report all at the same time. </li></ul><ul><li>Role underload – Having nothing to do or being asked to do little in one’s work can also be a quite stressful. </li></ul>

Consequences of Stress <ul><li>Subjective effects: Anxiety, Aggression (violent behavior), depression, guilty n shame </li></ul><ul><li>Behavioral effects: Drug use, excessive eating, loss of weight, excessive drinking n smoking, restlessness n trembling. </li></ul><ul><li>Physiological effects: Increased heart rate n blood pressure, dryness of mouth, sweating, difficulty in breathing etc </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>- Organizational effects: Absenteeism, poor industrial relations n productivity, high accidents n labor turnover n job dissatisfaction etc </li></ul>

Management of Stress <ul><li>It not true that employees do not want any stress at work place. </li></ul><ul><li>Current research indicated, employees are energized n motivated by moderate amount of stress. </li></ul><ul><li>What most people want is a challenging job assignment followed by moderate doses of competitive sprite. </li></ul>
