  • HD media content is quickly becoming thenorm nowadays, and more and moreconsumers are making the switch. Forcomputer users, this entails upgrading theirmachines with desktop or laptop replacementparts, if not buying new computers outright.The more tech-savvy and/or budget-constrained of them may even just make dowith driver updates to their computer parts.
  • While the above methods are all viable, they areonly good if you’re planning on viewing your HDcontent on your desktop’s relatively small screen,much less your laptop’s; hardly the experiencethat warrants high-definition. To get the true feelof HD, you would need something to connectyour computer to huge LED HDTVs. Fortunatelyfor you, current PCs have just that capability. Infact, there are up to three choices available forconsumers. Here is a breakdown of them.
  • Digital Visual InterfaceDigital Visual Interface, or DVI forshort, is the first of the three toappear, and the most common. Itfirst came out in 1999, and as suchis the transitional bridge betweenanalog signals (its immediatepredecessor being the analog-onlyVGA interface) and digital ones. It isbecause of this that its developersopted to make it compatible withVGA ports (via adapters) by having afew of its pins stay analog. At itscore, though, the DVI is designed fornoise- and distortion-free digitalsignals.
  • Digital Visual InterfaceSpeaking of pins, DVIs comein two variants, each carryinga different number of pins.The first variant, the single-link DVI, carries 18 pins; andthe more powerful dual-linkcarries 24. Single-links cansupport an admittedlyimpressive maximumresolution of 2098 x 1311pixels., with dual-linksamazingly surpassing that.
  • High-Definition Multimedia InterfaceHDMI was introduced backin 2003, when HD was justabout to penetrate themarket with the releases ofthe Blu-ray and HD-DVDformats just three yearslater. Ever since then,HDMI has slowly becomethe interface-of-choice forHD consumers for manyreasons.
  • High-Definition Multimedia InterfaceWhile dual-link DVIs cansupport higher resolutionlevels, currenttechnologies do notnecessitate it having toreach that far, meaningthat what single link DVIsand HDMIs have to offerpixel-wise are more thansufficient.
  • High-Definition Multimedia InterfaceHDMI ups its game,though, by allowing its 19pins to deliver a variety oflossless digital formats:Standard-definition (DVD),enhanced (artificiallyupscaled stabndard-def),high-definition (Blu-ray andthe now-defunt HD-DVD),and 3D. Moreover, HDMIcables also carry 8-channel audio.
  • High-Definition Multimedia InterfaceIn addition, HDMI cables alsohave CEC (ConsumerElectronics Control), a type ofconnection that syncs compatibleHDMI-capable devices to makethem act as one distinctelectronic device. For example, ifyou link a Samsung TV and aSamsung Blu-ray player togethervia HDMI cable, the CECfunction kicks in and syncs thetwo devices, allowing you tocontrol them using just oneremote. Pretty nifty, huh?
  • Display PortAnd then we have DisplayPort, which came into thegame relatively late; back in2006, to be specific. Becauseof its very recent appearance,not a lot of devices haveadopted this video interfaceyet. That said, it is looking togain ground quickly, andhopes to become an HDstandard alongside HDMI by2015.
  • Display PortA DisplayPort cable can carryboth video and audio signalsmuch like HDMI, but where itdiffers is that it does so in microdata packets. This small deliverysize implies that there is still a lotof headroom for bigger file typesshould the future find itnecessary.But again – and just to reiterate –unless you own or plan on owninga high-end rig, you won’t beseeing this one anytime soon.
  • Utilize Your Computer’s HD FeatureIf you truly want to experienceHD as it was meant to be, agood HD cable is the way to go,provided your computersupports it. Whichever HD videointerface you have, use it to trulycapture what high-definitionimagery is like.Also, it doesn’t hurt that an HDcable cost significantly less thana desktop or laptop partupgrade.
