Laptops are at a disadvantage when it comes to getting laptop replacement parts. Unlike desktop components, laptop parts are harder to come by, not to mention more expensive. This is because computer manufacturers intentionally make laptop spare parts in very specific dimensions, so that consumers will be forced to go to them and only them when in need of replacements.

5 ways to maximize the performance of laptops

  1. 1. 5 Ways to Maximize thePerformance of Laptops
  2. 2. Laptops are at a disadvantage when it comes to getting laptopreplacement parts. Unlike desktop components, laptop parts areharder to come by, not to mention more expensive. This isbecause computer manufacturers intentionally make laptopspare parts in very specific dimensions, so that consumers willbe forced to go to them and only them when in need ofreplacements.
  3. 3. As such, they can jack up the prices of these laptop parts atjust barely reasonable price points. Thankfully, for thosegamers looking to increase the graphical capabilities of theirportable computers, here are five ways they can do so withouthaving to spend a single penny.
  4. 4. 5 Ways to Maximize the Performance of Laptops1. Always Update Your Drivers2. Overclock the Settings of Your GPU3. Optimize Your Laptop’s PowerSettings4. Adjust Your Games’ In-Game Settings5. Turn Off Needless BackgroundPrograms
  5. 5. 1. Always Update Your DriversWhile replacing video cards in laptops is virtually unheard ofoutside of the very high-end ones, updating drivers isn’t.NVIDIA and ATI, the two major graphics processing unit(GPU) manufacturers, are constantly trying to outdo eachother in the hopes of garnering the biggest market share.Their vying for dominance has extended beyond factoryproduction lines by constantly providing updated drivers totheir already existing products.
  6. 6. Updating drivers can increase your GPU’s powerby as much as 20%, and doing so is as simple amatter as going to the companies’websites, downloading the appropriatedrivers, and installing them.
  7. 7. 2. Overclock the Settings of Your GPUOverclocking in laptops isn’t as common as in desktops, largely because very few laptop CPUs allow suchmanipulations. There are, however, some laptop GPUs – themore recent ones, most prominently – whose settings can beadjusted. If your GPU allows such handling, it would do youwell to make full use of this.
  8. 8. You only have to take note of two GPU settings. The first, thecore clock, refers to the GPU processor’s speed. The second, the memory clock, refers to the speed allocated by memorybuffers. Adjust these two accordingly, and experiment to seewhich levels yield the most performance while maintainingstability. Also, make sure to use very small increments; 5%increases is a good figure to go with.
  9. 9. 3. Optimize Your Laptop’s Power SettingsBecause laptops are portable by definition, their power settingscan suddenly fluctuate, especially if they are almost out ofelectricity. If, however, you happen to have your laptopbattery’s charger handy, and you’re near a power socket, youmight as well make use of the situation.
  10. 10. Alternatively, most new laptops have switchablegraphics settings; that is, the allocated powerincreases and decreases depending on which programsare used. For gamers, you may want to maximizesettings while playing games, and use the bare minimumwhen doing other laptop activities.
  11. 11. 4. Adjust Your Games’ In-Game SettingsThis option is largely arbitrary, depending on how much a gameris willing to do away with. Decreasing the resolution of games isthe most common adjustment, since the reduction in pixels won’tbe as discernible in the relatively smaller laptop screens.
  12. 12. 5. Turn Off Needless Background ProgramsThis is pretty self-explanatory. A good example is if youprefer playing games offline, you may want to turn offprograms like torrents (unused) and antivirus scanners(unnecessary).
