Virtual Machine -What is Virtual Machine VMs are created within a virtualization layer, such as a hypervisor or a virtualization platform that runs on top of a client or server operating system. SAN Storage  What is SAN Storage A SAN is a collection of storage and backup devices connected together through a network that is totally separated from other servers via a switch.  Fiber Channel, or FC, is a high-speed network technology (commonly running at 2-, 4-, 8- and 16gigabit speeds) primarily used for storage networking  FC History : 1GFC -2GFC- 4GFC- 6GFC-8GFC-16GFC- 32GFC 1997 -2001- 2004- 2005- 2008-2011 - 2014 (announced)   SAN storage depend on LUN :Lun is a logical entity that converts raw physical disc space into logical storage space that a host server's operating system can access For example, a computer may boot from the C: drive and access file data from a different D: drive. LUNs do the same basic job.  SAN Advantages 1)Share storage among different application servers. 2) Data is stored at a block level. 3) Physical elements of the SAN (servers, switches, storage arrays, etc.) are connected with Fiber Channe 4) SAN reduces down time. 5) Storage can be added different types of storage can be added to the pool. 5) Backups is centralized so reducing workload and providing greater assurance that the backups are complete. 6) Backup traffic never impacts users on the LAN. Summary : SAN is literally a separate network devoted entirely to storage. Almost all SANs communicate and connect to servers via a Fiber channel host adopter card and switch

    20. 20. SDRS Storage Distributed Resources Scheduler Storage DRS provides smart virtual machine placement and load balancing mechanisms based on I/O and space utilization. SRM Site Recovery Manager  Each site consists of a VirtualCenter Server, which is a Windows machine that runs the VirtualCenter service Installed with each VirtualCenter Server is the SRM Server. The SRM Server hosts Site Recovery Manager and array management technology. It also serves the SRM plug‐in to the VI Client. Management is done from the VirtualCenter client on the protected site.

    26. 26.  Virtual desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a desktop-centric service that hosts users desktop environments on remote servers and/or Blade PC, which are accessed over a network using a remote display protocol. Vmware=View Microsoft=VDI Vmware View Component Citrix=XenDesktop View Connection server : View Connection Server authenticates users through Windows Active Directory  Authenticating users Assign users to specific desktops and pools Assigning applications packaged with VMware ThinApp to specific desktops and pools Managing local and remote desktop sessions you must install connection server on separated server View Composer : View Composer can then create a pool of linked clones from a specified parent virtual machine. you can install Composer on Vcenter View Replica Server : To provide high availability and load balancing for View connection View Transfer Server : View Transfer Server synchronizes local desktops with the corresponding desktops in the datacenter by replicating user-generated changes to the datacenter. View Security Server : A security server is an instance of View Connection Server that adds an additional layer of security between the Internet and your internal network View Agent : this agent communicates with View Client to provide features such as connection monitoring, virtual printing, View Persona Management, and access to locally connected USB devices. View Client : The client software for accessing View desktops can run on a tablet, a Windows, Linux, or Mac PC or laptop, a thin client, and more. Pools What is Pool :This allows you to create different desktop pools for different users groups and provide a different services Type of Pools Manual pool :allows you to create customization VM and Assign it for specific user Requirement Vcenter  :install VM and install VMware Agent to communicate with Terminal Pool : Depend on RDP but via VMware client Requirement : Windows server –terminal services –View Agent Physical Pool : To convert Physical machine to virtual by VMware agent and VConnector Requirement : Physical PC- View Agent –V-Connector Automated Pool : is used to create several unique copies of the same desktop.     29. 29. Linked Clone : A linked clone is made from a snapshot of the parent. All files available on the parent at the moment of the snapshot continue to remain available to the linked clone. Ongoing changes to the virtual disk of the parent do not affect the linked clone, and changes to the disk of the linked clone do not affect the parent. Requirement :VM Parent (Snapshot) – Prepare Storage –Sizing (Replica_Persistent_Disposable_internal)-join Domain Linked Clone Division Replica : Replica is linked to a full clone virtual disk called a replica (copy of Parent) Disposable Disk : contains temporary files that are deleted when the virtual desktop is powered off. The files on the disposable disk are the pagefile,windows system temporary files and VMware log files. Persistent Disk :  Persistent disk is the new name for the old UDD (User Data Disk) and maintains the same characteristics of the UDD. The user profile is redirected to this disk for Example (desktop-my document –download) and use it for Roaming profile also called Delta data Internal Disk : To store the computer account password to ensure connectivity to the domain when a desktop is refreshed Additionally, the configuration for Quickprep and Sysprep are stored in this disk What is Dedicated and floating Dedicated pool : To Assign one desktop for Specific user Floating pool : With a floating assignment, View Manager dynamically assigns desktops in the pool to entitled users. Users connect to a different desktop each time they log in. When a user logs off the desktop is returned to the pool. What is View Agent and Client Agent : is software installed on vm to communicate with vcenter Client : is software communicates between client desktop and vm over vconnector server p2-11
    30. 30. Maintenance Pools : Refresh : When refreshing a desktop or a pool of desktops, you are basically bringing that VMs delta disk back into sync with the parents currently selected snapshot. Meaning, if you have went to the parent made changes and created a new snapshot that you wanted to deploy (which is what I had done) and then perform a refresh it will not apply those changes. It doesn't change which snapshot you are using, only refreshes the desktops back to the currently selected one. Recompose : With this function the Administrator can change the snapshot within the parent VM Rebalance : Basically it just has a look at your configured datastores and desktops and moves them around on  different datastores in order to best utilize the space allocated. Reset : disconnects any currently connected users and restarts the system Local Mode View Client with Local Mode allows the user to check out their virtual desktop to run on their local Windows computer while disconnected from the network. The user accesses their same View virtual desktop whether they are connected to the network or not. Offline users can synchronize desktop changes back to the datacenter when they return to the network. All existing IT security policies for that virtual desktop continue to be applied and enforced regardless of network connection. Check Out :feature allows a user to carry on using their virtual desktop even when they are not connected to the network. Check In: When the user returns the corporate network the user checks back in the virtual desktop, and changes (just the differences) are synchronized back to the vSphere environment. Rollback: When the user decides to return the virtual desktop to its state before it is checked back. Kiosk Mode Kiosk mode is quite useful, if you have some machines that you want to put in a public area for visitors to use, or for machines that are used in displays etc. Or if you have some older PC's that you just want to repurpose as internet terminals  Essentially it's a system that delivers a virtual VMware View desktop to a PC or Thin client without the need to authenticate to the connection server. Kiosk authentication is disabled by default, so you need to run a few commands to get it enabled.  Only View Connection Server instances that you enable to authenticate clients in kiosk mode can accept connections from accounts that start with a MAC address Kiosk Mode Requirements : Pool Floating – AD-OU-Group –Mac Address For client computer LAB Step 1: Prepare Active Directory 1. Set yourself up an OU to hold your kiosk machine, and a security group that will contain the user account you are going to create later. Step 2: Configure the VMware Connection Server Now log into your VMware Connection Server, open a command window with elevated privileges. then issue the following command; vdmadmin -Q -clientauth -setdefaults -ou "OU=Kiosk,OU=VDI,DC=cc,DC=local" noexpirepassword -group kioskusers P2-15
    34. 34. Kiosk Mode (cont) Step 3 : Now I will create a user 'custom-kiosk-user' with a password of 'Password123', and put him in the OU and group we created earlier. OR you can create a user that matches the MAC address of the client machine and auto generate a password like so, (this assumes the thin client or PC's MACaddresses is 3C:4A:92:D3:12:1 By Mac Address vdmadmin -Q -clientauth -add -domain cc.local -clientid 3C:4A:92:D3:12:1C -group kiosk By user client vdmadmin -Q -clientauth -add -domain cc-clientid user1 -password "Password123" -ou "OU=Kiosk,DC=cc,DC=local" -group kiosk -description "Kiosk Terminal“ Step 4 :4. Then allow this connection server to accept kiosk connections with the following command : vdmadmin -Q -enable -s V-Connection note : V-connection is the name of my VMware Connection Server. Step 5 : You can view the settings configured on this connection server with the following command : vdmadmin -Q -clientauth –list  Step 6: Connect to the Kiosk Machine Now from your client machine or thin client, you can execute the following command to open the kiosk session. Security Security server-Roles&permission-view policy-GP-firewall-Vshield Endpoint- Security server :A security server is an instance of View Connection Server that adds an additional layer of security between the Internet and your internal network. You can install one or more security servers to be connected to a View Connection Server instance.  Roles &Permission :The ability to perform a specific action or read a specific property. Examples include powering on a virtual machine and creating an alarm. Vmware Policy : to Apply specific policy for specific pool or Apply it on global setting Group policy VMware View includes Group Policy administrative (ADM) templates that contain security-related group policy settings that you can use to secure your View desktops. Firewall and ports we need to open some of ports between external user and V-connection through firewall VMware vShield Endpoint vShield Endpoint provides on-host antivirus and malware protection that reduces performance latency and eliminates the need to maintain individual security agents in each and every virtual machine, helping to simplify security administration while minimizing the risk of malware infections. The actual location of the package can be on the local Desktop or a USB device regardless of network connectivity  Streaming Or shortcut Portable : In streaming mode the application is launched from a shortcut on the start menu or desktop by Network connectivity Users should have Read access to this share folder.
