INTRODUCTION <ul><li>Library is the heart Zanzibar University. </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of independent learning and library use habit is a common problem among university and college students (Omar, 2010). </li></ul><ul><li>Students fail to make effective use of library resources probably because they lack foundation in the use these important resources. </li></ul><ul><li>Ranganathan (1973) claimed that “neither our school nor our colleges train our students in the use of reference books, not to speak of the general use of library”. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services
  3. 3. WHAT IS LIBRARY ORIENTATION <ul><li>Library orientation is both a marketing and welcoming activity and often forms part of the university's orientation program for first year students. (Fidzani, 1995) </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

OBJECTIVES OF (LOP) <ul><li>To introduce and educate students the services, information sources and resources available in the library and how to exploit them effectively and efficiently; </li></ul><ul><li>To provide basic library skills so that users can make efficient use of library material and services; </li></ul><ul><li>To encourage the reading habit among students and to make them independent users and learners in the library; </li></ul><ul><li>To encourage the user to seek the assistance of library professionals. </li></ul><ul><li>To establish the library as the centre of academic activity. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services
  5. 5. DEFINITION OF LIBRARY <ul><li> A collection of printed and non printed materials, organized systematically for use and maintained by a staff who facilitate the use of those materials. (Kumar, 1987) </li></ul><ul><li>Example of Library materials: </li></ul><ul><li>Books, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Maps, Journals, magazines, Periodicals, Research papers, Newspapers, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Audio-visual materials including microfilm, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, e-books, e-journals, audiobooks and many other electronic resources. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

REFERENCE SERVICES <ul><li>The library department which; </li></ul><ul><li>Assists users in finding the answer to specific reference questions. </li></ul><ul><li>Helps users in developing research strategies for writing reports, take home assignments and research papers. </li></ul><ul><li>Instructs users in the use of the library and its resources. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services
  8. 8. REFERENCE <ul><li>Books in this section are not to be checked out. they are available for student use within the library. </li></ul><ul><li>You will need your ZU student’s ID Card to use reference materials. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

READERS SERVICES <ul><li>These services include circulation and lending whereby; </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians make sure that, books and other resources are appropriately catalogued, classified, processed and making them available for users. </li></ul><ul><li>The librarian designs an efficient means of knowing which items are borrowed, by whom and for how long. </li></ul><ul><li>Note: </li></ul><ul><li>We put much emphasis here, since our desire is books not to simply sit on the shelves but to be put to good use by students and staff. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

READERS SERVICES…. <ul><li>All ZU students and Staff members are free to use and borrow Library materials. </li></ul><ul><li>No books or library materials may be brought out of the Library until the loan has been recorded at the issue desk. </li></ul><ul><li>Library materials borrowed must be returned on or before the due date. </li></ul><ul><li>The normal loan period for books is one week. </li></ul><ul><li>A fine can be imposed on anyone returning an overdue book. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services
  11. 11. LOSS AND DAMAGE <ul><li>Borrowers will be held responsible for materials out on loan. If the material is lost, an immediate report should be made to the Librarian to enable appropriate action to be taken. A borrower is allowed to either replace the book lost or damaged by purchasing it himself or requesting the Library to replace it. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

INTERNET SERVICES <ul><li>All students are free to access internet by using library computers </li></ul><ul><li>Student may Google, email, chat and search Information through diferent URLs including ZU library web page. www.zanvarsity.ac.tz </li></ul><ul><li>Wireless network is available for those who have their own laptops </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services
  13. 13. E-RESOURCES <ul><li>Zanzibar university registered to use INASP. Through INASP ZU staff and students can access a full range of journal database including full text </li></ul><ul><li>These resources can be accessed from any computer terminal with internet connection on campus. </li></ul><ul><li>Please visit ZU website then library page or you can also Google the database you want to access or find their URLs on the INASP website www.inasp.info </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services
  14. 14. OPAC <ul><li>Online public access Catalog is an online database of materials held by the ZU library. Searching the OPAC enables the searcher to know materials available in the library and to obtain a classification number and locate a particular book. </li></ul><ul><li>Through OPAC you may search a book by its author, title, subject, year of publication etc. </li></ul><ul><li>The ZU OPAC now is under construction. </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

ARRANGEMENT OF LIBRARY MATERIALS <ul><li>Fiction books are arranged on the shelf in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. </li></ul><ul><li>For Fiction, the sticker on the spine of the book contains the first 3 letters of the author’s last name. </li></ul><ul><li>Eg.   16. 16. ARRANGEMENT OF LIBRARY MATERIALS <ul><li>Nonfiction books are organized by their subjects. ZU library uses Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC) to classify its resources </li></ul><ul><li>At the broadest level, the DDC is divided into ten main classes, which together cover the entire world of knowledge. </li></ul><ul><li>Each main class is further divided into ten divisions, and each division into ten sections </li></ul>11/11/11 Zanzibar University Library Services

  24. 24. LIBRARY GENERAL REGULATIONS <ul><li>1. Smoking is not permitted in the Library. </li></ul><ul><li>2. Consumption of food and drinks is not permitted in the Library. </li></ul><ul><li>3. No bags, umbrellas, parcels, etc except files and books may be brought into the Library. </li></ul><ul><li>4. On leaving the Library, all users are required to produce for inspection all books and items taken out of the Library. </li></ul><ul><li>5. Silence must be observed strictly in the Library. Mobile phones must be in silent mode or turned off </li></ul><ul><li>7. Users must be decently dressed and conduct themselves properly in the Library. </li></ul><ul><li>8.
