  4. 4. New York and New Jersey  The Dutch originally settled New York; they called it New Netherland. The English took it over. King Charles II renamed it for his brother James, the Duke of York.  New Amsterdam became New York City.  New Jersey started as a proprietary colony, but became a royal colony.
  5. 5. Pennsylvania  Settled by Quakers:  All have an inner light  All are equal  Against slavery  Women allowed to lead  Persecuted by Church of England fro refusal to pay taxes to it  William Penn’s Holy Experiment  Bought land from natives
  6. 6. Delaware  Had been owned by the Swedes and the Dutch before England took it.  Was part of Pennsylvania, but was too far away from the representative assembly.  Became separate
  7. 7. The Middle Colonies were known as America’s breadbasket.
  8. 8. Backcountry  Frontier from Pennsylvania to Georgia  Great Wagon Road was the route to travel.  Other Europeans were also here: Dutch (really German), Scots, and Irish.
