    • How to upgrade from Magento 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 to 1.8? A Step by step tutorial of Magento 1.8 Upgrade. We strongly recommend you all to try this upgrade process in a test environment first which would be separate from your current production environment: Step# 1- Create Testing Environment In the first step, you need to create a testing or parallel development system which should be similar to your existing production system. Make sure you follow all the upgrade steps on this test system. Step# 2- Backup Database and Files Now, take a complete backup of your database (live website) and archive the file system which include all your extensions, themes, customizations and media files etc. This can be done via FTP client.
    • Step# 3 Import Database and Files In this step, you need to create a new database for your test environment and import the database (backed up in last step) in this new database. After Database import, copy your extensions, themes, customizations and media files that you backed up in step 2. Step# 4- Some Important Changes and Checks Copy local.xml to magento-install-dir/app/etc Go to your test system base URL in web browser Check if test and production systems are identical Note: If both the systems are not identical to each other, then try to upgrade again.
