  • On behalf of CIMA, I’d like to welcome everyone to this state of the industry discussion. We’ve got a great panel assembled here today and these captains of industry will help us make sense of what’s going on out there. Are we up? Are we down? Is “flat” still the new “up” or is “up” once again “up?” I’m going to start by ripping through some recent numbers put out by Forrester then we’ll open it up to our panelists to get their perspective.
  • So here we have Forrester’s latest forecast. As you can see, digital marketing is up 10% over 2008 and projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17% through 2014 landing us at nearly 20% of overall ad spend.
  • So where’s the money coming from?
  • 60% of marketers surveyed said they’ll be shifting money away from traditional marketing.
  • As for where they money’s going to -- Forrester breaks down the top 5 digital channels into mobile, social, email, display, and search.
  • Let’s look at this in a pie chart to get some better perspective. No surprise, search has the biggest slice followed by display -- with email, social, and mobile barely scratching the surface.
  • Now display’s a pretty broad category though so let’s look at how it broke down last year. This is data from the IAB and PWC. As you can see, the majority of display is still banners but rich media and video combine to make up 30% with the rest going to sponsorship.
  • But if you look at compound annual growth rate, social media is growing the fastest, followed by mobile, then display and search!
  • A couple weeks ago, I hosted a webinar for ad:tech about the 10 hottest areas of digital marketing and how to cash in on them. At the end, we polled the audience on what area of digital they thought was poised to see the most growth over the next 12 months. Before I reveal the results, I’d like to know what our audience here thinks. The choices are Video, Search, Behavioral, Social, Analytics, and Other. So a quick show of hands…
  • And here were the results from the webinar. Overwhelmingly, social was #1 with 56% followed by video, analytics, search then behavioral.
  • So now it’s time to see what our panel thinks. By way of introduction…
  • We’ve got Jeff Levick, President of Global Advertising and Strategy at AOL.
  • What’s he thinking? Is AOL banking on the power of the portal or do they have something else up their sleeve? We’ll find out soon enough.
  • Next is John Cantarella, GM of Time.com.
  • My guess is he’ll be preaching about premium content but we’ll have to stay tuned to find out.
  • Next we have Jeff Bell, Chairman at DOmedia and Venture Partner at NCT Ventures.
  • Jeff’s been spending a lot of time with start-ups in social media so no doubt he’s got Twitter on the mind.
  • And last but not least we have Sean Finnegan, President and Chief Digital Officer of Starcom MediaVest Group. As for what he’s thinking…
  • Just kidding. Just kidding. We’re buds so I can say that. For the record, ad:tech and CIMA are hosting a party tonight at 8pm at Enclave so hope to see you all there. OK, let’s get into it…
