  9. Spa Flower Bath, Four Seasons Resorts Bali 08 Bali: the Island of a Thousand Spas Bali has long been recognised for its natural beauty and elegant charm, be it by way of its terraced rice fields, white sand beaches, majestic volcanic mountains or the smiles that beam from swaying dancers to the beat of a ‘gamelan’. So much that makes up Bali is in some way connected to a form of aesthetics; dance, music, art, crafts, architecture, religion, cookery and ritualistic beauty. On the top of many a spas list is the ‘Balinese Massage’; a massage that anoints a locally prepared oil of a tropical, fragrant flower that is swept, rubbed and gently pressed into the skin; until total relaxation is achieved in hushed moans of appreciation. To give you insight into a select choice from the many spas to be found, as well as a couple of health care centres should you or your family need medical attention during your time here, please read on. Bali has always been fondly known as the island of a thousand temples, and with the number of spas that have popped up over the last decade, is now also recognised as the island of a thousand spas. Mandara Spa While Mandara Spa offers 300 different treatments throughout the world, the menu at each spa is tailored to that resort’s theme, design and clientele. The company’s philosophy is to have a three-part menu, incorporating one-third Balinese treatments in keeping with the roots in which Mandara was founded, one-third traditional and classic techniques stemming from Europe or Asia, and one-third indigenous or native to the land in which our spas are located (Bali once again). While the menus may differ from location to location, the spas all have in common an emphasis on beauty, rejuvenation and a uniquely indulgent and exotic experience with an East-West flavor. Maya Ubud The Maya is to the eastern side of Ubud and has stunning views over Petanu river gorge. The Spa is set way down the riverbank and is reached via an elevator discreetly blended into the tropical jungle surroundings.

  12. 11 Ancient Javanese Magic in East Java In Tugu Malang, spa is extremely inter-related with the secret of the East. Along with Apsara Residence (the masterpiece suite of Hotel Tugu Malang), Apsara Spa was created from a very deep affection towards the beauty and romanticism of the relationship between Indonesia and Cambodia in the old days. This precious relationship was built 1200 years ago when King Jayawarman II, a prince from or once lived in Java, ruled a kingdom in Cambodia. Long before spa was introduced, ancient Javanese tradition always incorporated the use of magical flowers and burning incense as an aromatherapy to stimulate the soul and the process of relaxing the mind started dramatically. Soon when the muscle began to relax with the influence of this aromatherapy, this condition made it possible to start the physical treatment. Everything becomes rhythmic, calm, and fresh with the perfect combination of romantic ambiance. Trying to capture this incredible nuance, Apsara Spa creates a very tender touch massage, like an Apsara dancer performing her dance (Yin), combined with a very famous Deep Tissue Massage (Yang) from the Java Island. One of Apsara Spa's specialized body treatment packages is 'Day Dream in Angkor'. This 4 hours treatment uses special recipes that contain various kinds of herbals, traditional spices and local exotic flower with six steps of treatment

Secret’s Salon and Spa has an ethnic Balinese ambience with its ornate wooden door, traditional chairs and accessories. Yet it possesses a contemporary feel through Secret’s concept of blending modern with traditional. After being seated, you are welcomed with a cold towel and hot ginger tea. The staff are happy to explain the spa menu available and you select the scent, scrub or ‘lulur’. The Balinese massage is slow and smooth, while the Thai massage is much harder. Secret’s is well-known for their homemade scrubs, you may choose from Javanese ‘lulur’ scrub, Soya scrub or Bali Coffee scrub. 17. 16 Oases Bimasena Spa Bimasena at the Dharmawangsa Hotel truly sets the standard for elegance and excellence. This very professional spa is serious about developing its therapeutic treatments and is a real innovator in Indonesia. Its vast selection of treatments includes hydrotherapy specials, body enhancers and the original Chocolate Treatment. Bimasena’s newest treatment is the exciting Ayus Lomi, a virtual dance with two therapists synchronizing their treatment to create a harmony of body, mind and soul. Ayus Lomi incorporates the Ayurvedic traditions of India with the rhythmic Lomi Lomi Nui style of massage indigenous to Hawaii. Relax in your own spa suite with whirlpool, steamroom and sauna then lie back and allow the two therapists to perform their elaborate rituals, including the shirodhara, where oil is pored from a ceramic jar to soothe and cleanse the forehead. Soon, you are lost in the massage as they roll along your body in rhythm, pressing down on pressure points and rocking the body with their forearms. The entire experience is powerful as you feel the stress go out and the oil warm your body. Well choreographed to the music, the rhythm breaks just long enough for a short chant and then more hot oil is poured over the body. An impressive holistic experience, the treatment begins with a determination of one’s dosha type: fire (pitta), air (vata) or water (kapha) and ends with recommendations on appropriate foods for your type. 18. Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Jakarta 17 Roger’s Salon, Clinic & Spa Nestled along one of the busiest streets in South Jakarta, Roger’s Salon, Clinic & Spa was the place to be on an early Monday morning, after a weekend full of muscle strains and cramps. Upon my arrival, my olfactory sense was triggered by a eucalyptus scent – quite strong yet pleasant. And to top that off was the choice of interior décor, which includes tall glass vases with fresh flowers and luminous candles, already eliciting a sense of tranquillity. More excited than I was before, I was led to the VIP area, the most secluded area in Roger’s. I knew straight away that I would find an escape from any of the physical pain taking over my body. The VIP area is ideal for couples wanting a romantic day at the spa – but if ever an argument breaks, there are the curtains in between that could separate you perfectly from each other but please avoid the lit candles! Roger’s offers seven different aroma and spa treatment packages. The prices range from Rp. 170000 to Rp. 700000. Each treatment has a distinctive name that comes along with it: Aroma Harmony, Aroma Heaven, Aroma Happiness, Spa Romantic, Spa Beauty, Spa Superbeauty, and Spa Cleopatra. I went for the Spa Romantic, which consists of aromatherapy, body massage, body scrub, steam/sauna, body mask and herbal bath. The entire treatment can take about three hours, but you can always cut it short. The other packages include facials, manicures, pedicures and creambath. My therapist Yuli was rather petite for an Indonesian lady, so why would anyone think of her as a masseuse? I certainly didn’t. Surprisingly, her hands felt sturdy and strong yet gentle. The Spa Romantic treatment begins with a body massage – one is laid down on the bed and is rubbed tenderly with essential oils, either revitalizing or whitening oil. She starts with my feet up to my thighs, upper body and making her way to my neck and head. Combining rhythmic and circular motions, Café Del Mar beats and the olfactory pleasure of the whitening oil, I was rejuvenated and restored from the weekend. After the massage, I was treated with a traditional body scrub. The best part came last, my herbal bath. A bath with herbal oils and fresh flower petals – I felt like a princess in disguise. The entire experience is powerful as you feel the stress go out and the oil warm your body. Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Jakarta
