  3. 3. Who is hiring? <ul><li>The Columbus Chamber predicts that education, health and social-services jobs will grow 2.4 percent this year, the greatest growth among 10 categories in central Ohio. Phone Interview Tips <ul><li>The best interviews are the ones that are prepared for the most </li></ul><ul><li>Do your homework.  Check out the company’s website and know some specific facts you can discuss or form into a question </li></ul><ul><li>Have your resume in front of you when on the phone and be prepared to discuss in detail your work/school/activity history </li></ul><ul><li>Have a set of success stories from your schooling/activities/job prepared to share.  These should include times when you were faced with a problem, how you overcame the problem, and the ending positive result </li></ul>

Phone Interview Tips cont. <ul><li>Answer questions in a concise and direct manner and avoid straying off the topic at hand. </li></ul><ul><li>Be yourself and relax </li></ul><ul><li>Close the interview reiterating your interest in the position and inquire on what the next step in the process will be </li></ul><ul><li>Get the contact info of that person that interviewed you and send a thank you email or letter </li></ul>

Face to Face Interview <ul><li>Always give yourself time to arrive at the interview 15 minutes early.  Never put yourself in a position where you have to rush to the interview, if it can be avoided. </li></ul><ul><li>Be well groomed and dress conservatively and professionally.  Wear a suit and tie, or a suit with a blouse, dress shoes, etc. Wear a limited amount of jewelry and make-up.  Avoid wearing strong cologne or perfume.  </li></ul><ul><li>Take a couple copies of your resume with you to the interviews. </li></ul>

Face to Face Interview cont. <ul><li>Try and get an itinerary of your interviews and research each interviewer as much as possible. </li></ul><ul><li>Maintain eye contact with everyone you speak with and be enthusiastic.  </li></ul><ul><li>Smile. </li></ul><ul><li>Avoid saying negatives about your previous employers. </li></ul><ul><li>Again, close the interview reiterating your interest in the position and inquire on what the next step in the process will be. </li></ul><ul><li>Make sure you get the contact info of the person who interviewed you (business card, call HR, etc.) and send that person or people a thank you email or letter. </li></ul>

When asked what the biggest mistake college graduates make during the interview process, employers said….. <ul><li>Acting bored or cocky </li></ul><ul><li>Not dressing appropriately </li></ul><ul><li>Coming to the interview with no knowledge of the company </li></ul><ul><li>Not turning off cell phones or electronic devices </li></ul><ul><li>Not asking good questions during the interview </li></ul><ul><li>Asking what the pay is before the company considered them for the job </li></ul><ul><li>Spamming employers with the same resume and/or cover letter </li></ul><ul><li>Failure to remove unprofessional photos/content from social networking pages, web pages, blogs, etc. </li></ul>
