  • 2. Your solution is not my (fucking) problem
  • 3. Not Everything With A Plug Is Technology
  • 4. Things that may be dismissed as fake technologies (Facebook, Amazon) often resolve very challenging technological problems.
  • 5. Amazon helped develop intelligent customer recommendations and logistical efficiencies that allow you to order almost anything, anytime, and get it the next day
  • 6. Web companies that fail are the companies that fail to exploit the true power of the medium
  • 7. Are There Any Real Technologies Left?
  • 8. The best companies create their own sectors - They are not popular - They are difficult to assess - They have technology risk (but not insurmountable) - If they succeed, their will be extraordinarily valuable
  • 9. The best founders want to radically change the world for the better.
  • 10. So where to start? The way to get startup ideas is not to try to think of startup ideas. It's to look for problems, preferably problems you have yourself.
  • 11. First and for all... Let’s kill the Hollywood effect together
  • 12. Organic Startup Ideas: Advantages
  • 13. 1. It ensures the problem exists
  • 14. 2. You avoid "made-up" or "sitcom" startup ideas
  • 15. 3 - If you’re honest with yourself, you know if you’re the right person
  • 16. But there is an opportunity at anthropology
  • 17. You can either build something a large number of people want a small amount, or something a small number of people want a large amount (niche). Choose the latter.
  • 18. Who wants this so much that they'll use it even when it's a crappy version one made by a two-person startup they've never heard of? If you can't answer that, the idea is probably bad
  • 19. But How do you tell whether something is the germ of a giant company, or just a niche product? Answer: it’s rarely obvious
  • 20. The Best Ideas “It’s a terrible idea” * "It’s a great idea!”
  • 21. A good strategy: Live in the future, then build what's missing.
  • 22. The verb you want to be using is not "think up" but "notice."
  • 23. Pay particular attention to things that bother you.
  • 24. Worrying that you're late is one of the signs of a good idea.
  • 25. Turn off the unsexy filter and the schlep (difficult) filter
  • 26. Look in areas where you have some expertise
  • 27. One good trick is to ask yourself whether in your previous job you ever found yourself saying "Why doesn't someone make x? If someone made x we'd buy it in a second." You know there's demand, and people don't say that about things that are impossible to build.
  • 28. BUT "Entrepreneurship" is something you learn best by doing it.
  • 29. The two pillars of entrepreneurship: ignorance and incompetence, so RELAX
  • 30. Don't try to start Twitter. Those ideas are so rare that you can't find them by looking for them.
  • 31. Ultimately, your SOLUTION is to SOLVE MY PROBLEM
  • 32. Connect with your audience emotionally around the problem, and then -- and ONLY then -- offer your solution as the remedy to that problem
  • 33. You are Welcome to Join the Adventure hey@thefamily.co
