What is NGSN  The goal of the Next Generation Service Network (NGSN) study group will develop an IEEE Project Authorization Request (PAR) for a project to standardize an overlay network architecture for the lifecycle management of multiple, value-added collaborative, information and communication services, independent of transport networks. Preparing report  In the IEEE-SA CaG Paris meeting, 6-7 Feb-2007, Huawei Technologies introduced NGSN first time.  Seven informal meetings (F2F & Telcon.) on discussion the PAR were held from 2007-02-08 to 2007-04-20:  Huawei, France Telecom, Korea Telecom and Oracle have agreed to support the project.  More companies showed their interests

Preparing report  In 2007-04-20, the original NGSN PAR was submitted to NesCom, supported by Huawei, FT, KT and Oracle.  The proposed Sponsors of NGSN are IEEE CaG and ComSoc.  The submittal email: thomaslee@huawei.com  Chair & Vice Chair candidates:  Dr. Jim Carlo, Huawei consultant, proposed as Working Group Chair.  Mr. Stephane H. Maes, Oracle Director of Architecture Voice, Mobility and Communications Platform, was proposed as Vice Chair.  Christian JACQUENET, Standard Director of France Telecom Group, was proposed as Vice Chair.  Project number was assigned consequently: P1750  PAR number subject to change.  PAR submission deferred at NesCom and SG formed.

The original submitted PAR  Scope: The goal of this standard is to define and specify a "service network architecture" that will be operated and/or used by service/network/content providers for the (dynamic/automated) providing of multiple, value-added, service offerings. Service network architectures are designed to facilitate if not automate the access to services, but also their design, deployment and operation, by means of capabilities that include (but are not necessarily limited to): SOA (Service Oriented Architecture), dynamic resource discovery and adaptive configuration, dynamic service discovery and publication, dynamic service production, dynamic composition and orchestration, dynamically-adaptive forwarding and routing schemes, QoS enforcement, QoS experience, Carrier grade performances, service management, dynamic usage reporting, security and trust, end to end QoE (Quality of Experience), and service management model. This new architecture will define how to use in Telecommunications environments, and specially NGNs, technologies and design patterns like SOA, service registering, service addressing, service routing, service interaction, service roaming, service composition, service discovery, service management and service reporting and end-to-end QoS (Quality of Service). The proposed standard effort will take benefit from existing techniques, such as those introduced in Next Generation Networks environments or provided by Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA).

Feedbacks  Feedback from IEEE-SA CaG and ComSoc  Continuous support for the development of NGSN proposal.  Authorized a IEEE-SA Study Group for P1750/NGSN to refine the PAR.  Jim Carlo assigned to be the Chair of the NGSN SG.  Professor Mehmet Ulema assigned as the technical liaison from ComSoc to NGSN SG.  Feedback from IEEE-SA NesCom members  Ron Petersen, William Hopf, Young Kyun Kim, Ted Olsen submitted positive comments.

Follow-up activities  NGSN SG meetings  Huawei to host first meeting in Shenzhen China on 1st to 3rd August  Potential second meeting: NY/NJ, end of August  Target: to refine the PAR for submission  Engage global industry stakeholders  PAR modification and re-submitting  Modification according to the NGSN SG meeting  Re-submit to NesCom when ready
