Stock Summaries

  1. 1. Name________________ Period____ Date_____________ Mr. Furman Stock Market Simulation (SMS) The Arizona Stock Market Simulation (SMS) is a motivating approach to learning about the American economic system. The SMS is an exciting statewide competition in which teams of 3 students in grades 4-12 research companies to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common and preferred stocks and compete for the best portfolio during the simulation. Winning teams in the grades 4-8 category and the grades 9-12 category receive cash awards and recognition at an awards lunch. This simulation will be completed using the Arizona SMS web page. Directions: Each period will be divided into teams of three students maximum. Each group will be given a team number code and a password. Together, the group will research and develop a portfolio of all the stocks, bonds, commodities, and mutual funds they have chosen to invest in during the simulation. During the course of the simulation, the group must track the progress of the portfolio each week. The group must make at least one trade during the simulation. Time will be given in the computer lab for students to research their investments and to make trades. However, after groups have set up their portfolios, they will then be on their own to keep track how the portfolio is doing each week. After the initial set-up of the portfolio, each week students should continue to buy and sell other investments other than the ones originally researched in order to keep the portfolio as profitable as possible. Class time may be provided for this when available. You are allowed to trade stocks, bonds, commodities, and mutual funds during the simulation. Please read the directions for how to purchase each of these on the Arizona Stock Market Simulation web page and on pages _________ in this directions packet. The simulation will run from February 5 - April 13, 2007 Web address: www.arizonasms.com Team #________________ Password_______________ 1
  2. 2. Group Member Roles: Stock Broker - This person’s job will be to make all of the group’s trades. He/She will be the only member of the group allowed to log on to the simulation with the Team # and password to make trades. He/She must keep a list of all the transactions the team makes using the Trade Tracking Sheet. This will serve to double check what you have done in case the AZ SMS makes a mistake. See page 9 Name______________________________________________ Recorder - This person will be responsible for recording the group’s portfolio value each week on the chart provided. See page 8 Name______________________________________________ Spokesperson(s) - This person or person’s job will be to present the group’s portfolio to the class at the end of the simulation. See page 10 Name______________________________________________ How you will be graded: 40 Points Individual Grade- 20 points • Stock Summaries of 10 companies. Pages 4-7 Group Grade- 20 points • Weekly portfolio filled in -10 points Page 8 • Portfolio presentation - 10 points 2
  3. 3. Simulation Vocabulary Bear Market A market where the dominating trend is one of falling prices. Bond A long-term promissory note in which the issuer agrees to pay the owner the amount of the face value on a future date and to pay interest at a specified rate at regular intervals. Commodities A commodity is any homogenous item, which may be freely bought and sold. The term typically refers to products such as coffee, cocoa and soybeans (soft commodities) or gold, aluminum and platinum (hard commodities). Common Stock A securities holding that affords the possessor to have ownership in the company which provides benefits such as voting rights and dividend sharing. In the event of liquidation, the rights of common stock holders come after all other holders, such as bond, debt and preferred stock. Bull Market A market where the dominating trend is one of rising prices. Preferred Stock A stock holding, which provides a specific dividend that is paid before any dividends are paid to common stock holders. In the event of liquidation, their rights come before common stock holders, but after other holders, such as bond and debt. Dividend Distribution of earnings to shareholders prorated by the class of security and paid in the form of money, stock, scrip, or, rarely, company products or property. The amount is decided by the Board of Directors and is usually paid quarterly. Mutual fund dividends are paid out of income, usually on a quarterly basis from the fund's investments. Mutual Fund Fund operated by an investment company that raises money from shareholders and invests it in stocks, bonds, options, commodities or money market securities. Portfolio All of the different investments (stocks, bonds, commodities, and mutual funds) owned by the same individual or organization. Ticker Symbol A unique four- or five-letter symbol assigned to a security. If a fifth letter appears, it identifies the issue as other than a single issue of common stock or capital stock. A list of fifth-letter identifiers and a description of what each represents follows: 3
  4. 4. Stock Summaries For this part of the simulation, go to the home page of the AZ SMS and use the “Obtain Quote” section to look up the history of your stock. Look up 10 investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, commodities) in which you are interested in investing. From these ten, pick the top ones in which you would like to invest. You do not have to invest in all of them. Each person in your group must look up 10 investments. You may not look up the same stocks, commodities, bonds, or mutual funds as another member of your team, so check with each other before doing your research. After researching your initial ten investments, you may continue to research and invest.
