  3. 3. Chinese Painting <ul><li>one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. </li></ul><ul><li>Earliest paintings were ornamental, not representational </li></ul><ul><li>they consisted of pattern or designs, not pictures. </li></ul>

Kinds of Chinese Painting <ul><li>Meticulous </li></ul><ul><ul><li>(Gong bi) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>often referred to as &quot;court-style&quot; painting </li></ul><ul><li>Freehand style </li></ul><ul><ul><li>(Shui mo) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>loosely termed watercolour or brush painting. The Chinese character &quot;mo&quot; means ink and &quot;shui&quot; means water. This style is also referred to as &quot;xie yi&quot; or freehand style. </li></ul>

  13. 13. Japanese painting <ul><li>The origins of painting in Japan date well back into Japan's prehistoric period. Simple stick figures and geometric designs can be found on Jōmon period pottery and Yayoi period(300 BC – 300 AD) dotaku bronze bells. Mural paintings with both geometric and figurative designs have been found in numerous tumulus from the Kofun period (300-700 AD). </li></ul>
