  2. 2. The tundra is cold just about all year. During the summerit’s warmer and the sun shines 24 hours a day. The tundrahas been called ‘the land of the midnight sun’. A shortsummer lasts 6-10 weeks. In the tundra it never getswarmer than 45-50 degrees F. The warmer weather causespermafrost which is ice that never goes in away into theground to melt, creating bogs and shallow lakes that neverdrain.   7. 7. Caribou Moss grows in arctic and northern areas around the world. It grows on the ground and on rocks . It looks like a foamy, grey- green spongy stuff and grows to 1-4 inches high.   8. 8. Pasque Flower is a member of the Ranuncluaceaefamily which is latin for little frog. The PasqueFlower has a lot stems that rise 6-8 inches off theground. On each stem is one flower with 5-8petals. The colour in the petals is from darklavender to almost white. The centre of the floweris yellow.   10. 10. The Ermine is found all over Canada, Northern USA andEurasia. The Ermine lives in northern habitats such astaigas and tundras. Ermines like to live in marshes, openspaces and rocky areas next to the woodlands. The ermineis well adapted to living in this environment. Ermines maketheir dens in the roots of the trees in the south. The ermineis small and weighs around 85.4 grams. The head and bodylength can grow from 7-13 inches and the tail can grow upto 5 inches. In the spring and summer ermines coat ischocolate brown with a white belly and a black tip on thetail. Ermines have 34 sharp teeth. It has short legs, longbody and long neck.   11. 11. The Harlequin Duck gets its name from the look of the maleHarlequin because it looks like the colourful costumes worn by‘harlequins’, who were people dressed as clowns. The male duckis dark blue, highlighted in black, outlined white striping and spotsof white. It’s wing tips are brownish black and its wings arechestnut red. The female duck is not as colourful as the male duck.It’s not as brown and its marked by 3 pale patches on its face. Theharlequin ducks have a buoyant, firm body with strong webbedfeet, which give the ducks power to swim through tough waters.They are expert swimmers. When they fly their wings beat rapidly.The harlequin duck weighs about 1-1.5 pounds and is about 1-1.5feet long. Its wing span is 2-2.3 feet in width. www.freeimages.co.uk
