    • YOGA AND GERIATRIC MEDICINE YOGAMAARG FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic10/4/2012 Dr Shashikant S K Health care Providing on the Bases of MEDICAL EVIDENCES 1 by DOCTORS www.yogamaarg.com
    • WHAT IS GERIATRIC MEDICINE ?The branch of medicine that is concerned withthe aging process; theprevention, diagnosis, and treatment of healthproblems in the aged; and the social andeconomic conditions which influences the healthcare of the elderly is called Geriatric Medicine.Medicine dealing with old age.
    • GENERAL  Aging is a progressive, predictable process that involves the evolution and maturation of living organisms.  The word senescence is derived from the Latin word senex, meaning “old man” or “old age”. (Frail)  Cellular senescence is a phenomena where isolated cells demonstrate a limited ability to divide in cultural.  Organismal senescence is the aging of organisms. It is generally characterized by the declining ability to respond to stress, increasing homeostatic imbalance and increased risk of disease. Because of this, death is the ultimate consequence of aging.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 3 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    •  Since the homeostatic mechanisms become less sensitive, less well sustained, sooner or later everyone encounters a challenge which they are unable to deal with effectively and the person dies. Hence the rise of death rate with age has been recognized as the hallmark of senescence.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 4 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • Health status elderly in India The leading cause of death in the elderly has been changing from infectious disease to non- communicable disease. ICMR repot the number of blind persons among older population was around eleven million in 1996, and eighty percent of them were due to cataract.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 5 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    •  60% of the older population has reported hearing loss. The consequence of these problems are not limited to physical disability, but also with on economic, social and psychological domains of effected individuals life. The risk of specific psychiatric illness has been shown to increase with age (Ex: dementia, Alzheimer)10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 6 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • THEORIES OF AGING Radical damage, a decline in immune surveillance, molecular cross linking, a decline in the level of melatonin secretion, neuroendocrine substratum of gonadal failure and senescence of genes in the DNA.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 7 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • RDT: It is an integrated phenomenon. Suggests that damage due to ubiquitous oxygen-free radicals (e.g. super oxide) and non-radical oxidants (e.g. hydrogen- peroxide) is a fundamental physiological process of aging related deterioration. Moreover ,it has been suggested that free radical activity or oxidative stress may be accelerated by psychosocial stress.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 8 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • IST: It suggests that as age advances the humoralas well as cell-mediated immunity declines. Also, ithas been shown that the anti body response will beimpaired particularly in response to tetanus toxoidand influenza viral antigens.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 9 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • NET: It is influence of neuroendocrine control of thegonads, adrenal and thyroid glands on the agingprocess. Menopause and Andropause. A depletion of the nerve growth factor (NGF) hasbeen proposed to play a central role in aging of theCNS. Also with advancing age the level ofdehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and melatoninsteadily decline. The decline in melatonin has alsobeen regarded as a triggering factor forsenescence.Senescence of genes in the DNA also10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 10 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • Concept of Health Aging It is influenced by various factors, intrinsic and extrinsic to the individual. Healthy aging is described as a state of low risk and high function in contrast to usual aging which is non- pathologic state but high risk. It can be preventable, reversible and slowed.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 11 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    •  It was reported that healthy aging has three main components A) A low probability of disease and disease related disability. B) A high capacity for cognitive and physical functioning. C) An active engagement with life including interpersonal relations and productive activity.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 12 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • Health problem in the Elderly General Coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, Hypertension, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorder. Another natural consequence is visual and auditory perceptions and also the increased infectious diseases due to immune senescence and autoimmune diseases and cancer.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 13 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • Physical problems: Skin become wrinkling and sagging, dry and rough, hair become white, fat accumulation, reduce activity the sweat, falls, balanced disorder, dizziness, visual impairment, confusion, postural hypotension. Leading of stiffening of connective tissue, decreased muscle strength, prolonged reaction time, decreased visual acuity and depth perception, impaired proprioceptive sensation and increased postural sway. Complaints of Pain, joint movement limitation, muscle weakness, spasticity, loss of sensory input, osteoporosis.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 14 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of

    • Psychological Problems:Depression and cognitive impairment, insomnia, memory loses, amnesia, anxiety. Because ofisolation from the mainstream of life, loss ofindependence, an ability to socialize, thetendency to pitied by others and easilydistractible thought process.
    • Psychosocial problems Isolation from the main stream of life. Lose of independence. Inability to socialize. Tendency to be pitied by others. Easily distractible thought processes. Emotional stress Loneliness. Neglected. Old women face more poverty and poor health.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 18 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of

    • Yoga in Geriatric Medicine It deals with the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual wellbeing of an individual. Patanjali enumerates 8 stages of yoga to attain the state of super consciousness through asana, pranayama, kriyas, meditation and philosophy. According to Yoga philosophy our human life span is divide in to 3 stages childhood, adulthood and old age.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 20 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    •  Yoga: It is shown that yoga can bring about psycho physiological effects as well as therapeutic benefits. It increased the awareness that yoga is very useful mind- modifying technique with potential applications in the promotion of positive health, prevention and treatment of disease, as well as in rehabilitation.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 21 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
    • CONCLUSION Yoga would be useful for the promotion of positive health in older persons.10/4/2012 YOGAMAARG 22 FOUNDATION(www.yogamaarg.com) Holistic Health care Providing on the Bases of
