Donna, Tx -- by Padre Jaime

  1. 1. Donna, Tx by Padre Jaime James Lienert, M.S.F. <pjaimel@sbcglobal.net> (coached by wkboonec@gmail.com) June 2009
  2. 3. Donna is a town of 15,000 located seven and a half miles north of the Rio Grande, and fifty-eight miles east of the Gulf of Mexico. The town was established in 1904, and is almost exclusively a residential town surrounded by agriculture.

  6. 7. Ancient Mesquite Downed by Dolly – Mesquite tumbado por Dolly In the back yard of the rectory.
  7. 8. Old Abandond House – Casa Vieja Abandonada
  8. 9. There are several grocery and convenience stores, but for any serious shopping such as for clothing, appliances and for medical attention, one must go to the contiguous larger towns which offer the latest conveniences.

  12. 13. The pictures in this presentation were taken within a radius of twelve blocks of the church which is in the oldest part of town. For that reason there are many old and abandoned buildings, both residential and industrial. In former years there were many canneries for vegetable and citrus products.
  13. 14. Cow’s Head Barbacoa – Barbacoa de Cabeza Sunday Special - Los Domingos
  14. 15. Irrigation Canal – Acequia
  15. 16. Down Town – El Centro
  16. 17. A rare freeze some twenty-five years ago severely damaged the orchards, and now growing for the fresh vegetable market is more profitable. Too, raising sugar cane and sorghum is quite profitable.
  17. 18. Flamboyant - Flamboyán
  18. 19. Health - Herbs – Healers - Fortunes
  19. 20. Sendero Tropical de Texas
  20. 21. Indigo Bush - Ceniza In Spanish this is called <ceniza> which means <ashes> , because of the color of the leaves. There are many varieties, one of which is rather common around La Esmeralda. They all have one characteristic in common: they bloom only after a rain. They can be watered for months but will not bloom. Could it be the nitrogen in rain water that is their signal for blooming? There was a rain a few days before. Note the fallen blossoms.
  21. 22. Tortillas
  22. 23. Out and away from the old part of town there are residential lots of up to more than an acre where there are some large and beautiful homes.
  23. 24. Tacos
  24. 25. Watering Hole - Abrevadero
  25. 26. On the whole, Donna has failed to progress at the same pace as the contiguous communities, and it shares fully in the unsavory activities of the narco elements characteristic of southern border areas.
  26. 27. Water Tower - Aljibe Elevado
  27. 28. Town Park – Parque Municipal
