  • Why Data Migration - The challenges in dealing with this massive growth in data have material impacts on business results. Issues common to many companies include: LOWER PROFITSPaul Kielstra, “In search of clarity: Unravelling the complexities of executive decision-making,”The Economist, Economist Intelligence Unit, September 2007POOR DATA QUALITY LEADS TO LOWER PRODUCTIVITY By Jeff Kelly, News Editor25 Aug 2009 | SearchDataManagement.com News on CRM trends and technologyDigg This!     StumbleUpon     Del.icio.us    While the use of data quality software has hit an all-time high, companies, by their own admission, are still losing boatloads of money because of inaccurate data, according to a recent survey. The average organization surveyed by Gartner said it loses $8.2 million annually through poor data quality. Further, of the 140 companies surveyed, 22% estimated their annual losses resulting from bad data at $20 million. Four percent put that figure as high as an astounding $100 million. Much of this loss is due to lost productivity among workers who, realizing their data is incorrect, are forced to compensate for the inaccuracies or create workarounds when using both operational and analytic applications, Ted Friedman, an analyst with the Stamford, Conn.-based research firm, said in an interview. COMPLIANCE FAILURES(Source: InfoWorld http://www.infoworld.com/t/business/report-90-percent-companies-fail-compliance-223) 90 percent of companies fail compliance. A new report by the IT Policy Compliance Group finds that the vast majority of businesses do not meet data-handling regulations, increasing the risk of a data breach. In a report to be published by the IT Policy Compliance Group on July 18, the consortium of IT compliance and security experts concludes that some 90 percent of all businesses still do not have sufficient policies in place to meet data governance regulations and adequately limit the risk of a breach. In the survey of 475 companies, a third of whom reported revenues of more than $1 billion last year, the industry group found that an overwhelming majority of the firms expect to deal with at least six business disruptions related to major data incidents per year along with five or more instances of information loss or theft.

    • 7. Data Migration Vision and Challenges during SAP Projects Implementation Project demands Functional teams need data early in the project It is difficult to create upload programs and templates becuase the requirements and customising are not yet finalised The team members want to test with actual customer data Data delivered is of poor quality. Once loaded, the errors are difficult to identify and reload of only subsets of the data is difficult There is a need for multiple data migration cycles throughout Realisation Phase It takes too long to get all the data loaded due to poor quality and time to correct errors. Therefore repetitions need to be limited. Closer to realisation, data requirements change and templates need to be adjusted on the fly Administering templates of various versions and from various sources is an administrative nightmare. It is difficult to change the LSMW programs Governance and Handover need to be managed Various different parties are involved. It becomes virtualy impossible to track partially successful loads Sequence of objects is important 7 Challenges to Data Migration Team The exact sequence is discovered by trial and error or is dependant on an expert with cross-functional knowledge
    • 8. Where Winshuttle helps • No staging area is required • Data can be validated against SAP before update • Error messages are provided directly in the data sheet • Data source from Excel or Access are intuitive for most business users • No programming is required when need to be changed • Sharepoint provides structure and central administration of templates and loaded sheets
    • 9. Winshuttle vs LSMW LSMW Winshuttle Data needs to be provided in text format (often exported from Excel/Access) Data is provided directly on Excel or MSAccess Errors only become apparent during update Pre-validation is available in the spreadsheet before running the actual update Re-processing of errors is cumbersome and limited to SM35 functionality Errors can be fixed before SAP update. Winshuttle allows a run-mode whereby only records with errors are repeated Generally changes cannot be undone except by populating a new data file with original values Winshuttle can generate a backup so that data can be restored to original position easily LSMWs have to be transferred between SAP systems (created in development, transferred to productive) Logon to SAP for update is dynamically chosen at the time of the update without need to transfer programs
