The City of Light shines even brighter in December
when the French capital shimmers with Christmas
lights adorning the gorgeous avenue des
Champs-Elysées and the famous department stores.
This month marks the grand opening of Mugler
Follies, the new cabaret created by the multi-talented
designer Manfred T. Mugler, and what better way to
celebrate the holiday season in Paris than by taking
in a cabaret.
With the cooler weather making everyone eager to
seek shelter and warmth, we take you on a discovery
tour of Paris’s covered passageways. Housing

The sexy revue hits Paris on the 10th of December and is everything
you would expect from a show put together by Manfred T. Mugler,
the cutting-edge avant-garde designer behind fashion label Thierry
Mugler. Manfred T. Mugler, who is known for his creative talents isn’t
new to performing arts having himself studied dance and worked
behind the lens on different projects including directing George
Michael’s famous Too Funky music video as well as having created
the Zumanity revue for Le Cirque du Soleil in Vegas.
Expanding his creative pool by creating a cabaret, Mugler brings
together his many talents to the stage with an explosion of colour,
eroticism and magic. Telling the story of a young woman in search
of her inner self, the revue follows her on her journey where she
finds herself in unpredictable and unusual situations and finally
transforming into the woman that she is destined to become.
With dancers, acrobats and singers being joined onstage with
comedians, performers and models, this cabaret is a vibrant show
that reinvents the traditional cabaret. Original songs composed
specifically for each act and with every act transporting the audience
from one universe to another, Mugler Follies will have the audience
on an emotional rollercoaster guaranteed to exhilarate and delight.

When visiting the French capital one of the
first things to see and do is take in a fabulous
cabaret. And this season a new show takes
centre stage with the opening of Mugler Follies,
Paris’s new cabaret show.

Some are winding labyrinths while others are reminiscent of perfectly straight
streets, but they are all invitations to a particularly Parisian promenade.

A
number of the city’s covered
passageways house high-end
boutiques, the off-beat, old book
shops, art galleries and delightful
spots for savouring bistro fare
or a good cup of coffee while
watching strollers and people with a purpose
snake their way through these ways. It is a
singular ambiance and perhaps the reason why
at times some of the boutiques house the rare
and unique, like a stringed instrument maker
in the Galerie Véro-Dodat or a cane shop in the
Passage Jouffroy.
The passages were essentially constructed
during two relatively brief time periods, the first
from 1823 to 1828 and a second phase from
1839 to 1847. They reached their peak during
the Restoration (1814-1830) offering a haven for
pedestrians from the traffic, bad weather and
the streets themselves, which at the time lacked
sidewalks and sewers and overflowed with
carriages and when it rained, mud. They have
over the decades fallen in and out of fashion but
are always worthy of a visit. Some 20 covered
passageways remain today in Paris, architectural
treasures of glass, steel and for some, fabulous
décor.
A case in point is the beautifully appointed
Galerie Vivienne, strategically situated near
the Bourse (the stock exchange), the Bank of
France and the Palais Royal and whose décor
was influenced by Pompeii and Herculaneum
and so two splendid caryatides decorate the
rue des Petits-Champs entrance. This elegant
labyrinth was built in 1823 and today offers a
windy and wending way to discover the elegant
and the off-the-beaten path. With its rotundas,
potted plants, rectangular rooms and steps
leading to hallways, it is almost like visiting a
private mansion. The superb original floors by
the celebrated Italian mosaic maker Facchina are
dazzling. A nice place to stop for a meal,

tea and plenty of people watching is
A Priori Thé at number 35. There is a fabulous
old and new bookshop, Jousseaume, at number
45, that’s been in the same family for three
generations. Si Tu Veux at number 68 carries
wonderful toys and games for children while
aBis at number 24 has a unique, eclectic
selection of accessories and gifts. High-end
fashion designer shops include that of Jean Paul
Gaultier who has been there since 1986. Fashion
seems to have been drawn to the spot with
Kenzo holding his first fashion show there back
in 1970.
Other great finds include luxury scarves and
shawls at Etablissements Wolff & Descourtis at
number 18, the hat maker Céline Robert, where
the women of the same family have designed
hats since 1905, has a boutique at number
27 and interior decorator Joyce Pons de Vier is
at number 64 with a studio perched on the floor
above the shop where curtains and drapes are
fashioned.
You used to be able to pass from the Galerie
Vivienne into the Galerie Colbert with its rotunda
and spectacular glass cupola, but the gateway
has been closed off. The Galerie Colbert is
worth a visit for its splendid architecture and
the elegant Le Grand Colbert, with its fabulous
globed lamps, serves up fine traditional French
cuisine.
The passageways are decidedly a Right Bank
urban phenomenon, their entranceways are
inspired by the model of the triumphal arch and
often ornately decorated. Some are doted with
mirrors enlarging the space, but also making
navigation within a little more difficult although
they still provide convenient shortcuts, for the
initiated. The gateways can also be closed, for
while the passages are public during the day, the
night brings privacy for nestled above, reached
by half hidden stairways, are apartments.
The immediate success of the Galerie Véro-
Dodat was the direct result of its splendid décor,

still intact today with resplendent double marble
columns that have retained their mirrors, gilt
trims and a fine black and white tiled floor. It,
like the other covered passages, was among
the first places in the city to benefit from gas-lit
lamps in 1830. The parts of the ceiling that are
not glass are adorned with delightful frescoes.
Inside are boutiques befitting the décor, notably
two Christian Louboutin shops, By Terry and Il
Bisonte. Italian jeweller Angela Caputi chose the
Galerie as the location for her Parisian boutique
while the aptly named Galerie du Passage has
been exhibiting its fine collection of art and
temporary exhibits there for over 20 years now.
There are some other wonders as well like the
stringed instrument maker, R & F. Charle, who
also does repair work in the studio tucked above
the shop at number 17. It also houses what
might be the snazziest shoe repair shop in the
capital, Minuit moins 7, and worthy of a visit
for its fine shoe care products. Back in the 19th
century the French Romantic poet and writer
Gérard de Nerval was a regular at the Café de
la Galerie. Today, the Café de l’Epoque whose
name befits its décor, located at the rue de
Bouloi gateway is a traditional French brasserie
and a fine place for a meal or drink. The passage
runs straight from one entrance way to another
and provides a fine exploration of Paris of
yesterday and today.

Clients can choose from a selection of 1000
different fabrics, 60 different collar styles and
35 different cuffs to create their bespoke shirt.
Tailored from mostly Italian fabrics including
Albini and Thomas Mason, the shirts are put
together in Poland and are delivered within
a fortnight.
The family-run fashion house also offers
elegant accessories complementing the
tailored shirts, including chic cufflinks, socks

Monograms in different fonts and colours

A SPARKLING WORLD AT
ANGELA CAPUTI
Hollywood and Granito are among the latest
collections that have been brought out by
Angela Caputi adding up to a brilliant and
bright season. The Hollywood collection is
sophisticated and its sparkling patina makes
it perfect for Christmas and end of the
year parties. The pieces are made with the
designer’s characteristic resin but the glitter
gives them a distinctive trait. The Granito
collection is a special line featuring clean-
cut geometric shapes in which hues of ruby
or agate are paired with unusual elements
reminiscent of granite with the rich colours
rendering the pieces particularly elegant.
Meanwhile, another striking collection
includes pieces that bear resin looking like
leopard spots.
The pieces are all made in myriad colours
of plastic resins, rendered precious by the
hours of handmade art and craft work that
goes into their fashioning with some of the
pieces encrusted with mother of pearl. One of
the many charms of resin is that the colours
are infinite and Angela Caputi even does a
version of resin tortoise shell in a line that has
become a classic. The collections generally
feature bracelets, necklaces and earrings and
the designer also creates various models of
stickpins, which are excellent for fastening a
shawl, with matching earrings. She also does
lovely clutch and evening bags.
The shop is secretly tucked away into one
of the most elegant of the French capital’s
passageways, La Galerie Véro-Dodat, near
the Louvre. Inside, delightful dresser drawers

showcase the handcrafted jewellery
within. The boutique experience is
akin to child’s play as the shopper
reaches to open a drawer, dreamy
drawers that are reminiscent of
those found in a jewellery box.
The Florentine designer, whose
creativity evolves significantly
with every collection, has also
drawn her inspirations from
American films of the 1940’s,
one of the golden ages of
Hollywood.
It was 1975, when
Angela Caputi opened
her workshop in Florence,
employing only women, a
pioneering step in Italy. The
designer had worked with children
with communication difficulties,
showing them how to work with
their hands. Her love of fashion and
desire to communicate to women
led her into designing jewellery.
Today, the magic is created in her
workshop in the historic centre
of Florence just steps away from
Ponte Vecchio in the 17th century
building known as the Palazzetto
Medici and her creations were
featured in the Rara Avis exhibition
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York.
The designer, whose brand name, Angela
Caputi Giuggiù, reflects the nickname her
father gave her, Giuggiù, still continues her
pioneering work, giving talks to women,
sharing her business experience and
knowledge.

bar, Le Bar 8, and the Chinese culture’s
lucky number. A mixture of chocolate
textures with a creamy milk chocolate
centre and a dark chocolate mousse
very lightly flavoured with Chartreuse
and enveloped in an almond biscuit,
this bûche is a chocoholic’s dream.
Available between the 16th and the 25
of December, the bûche is served at
the hotel’s restaurant, Camélia, or at the
Comptoir des Pâtisseries where mini
versions of the grande cake is sold to be
sampled in or to take-away.

An exhaustive retrospective being held at the Grand Palais is paying tribute to one of the greatest artists of
the 20th century, Georges Braque. Painter, engraver, sculptor, he founded Cubism, invented pasted papers and
in so doing became one of the leading figures in the avant-garde of the early 20th century before focusing
definitively on still life and landscape painting. The show presents all of the periods in his art from Fauvism to his
last works with the dazzling series of large studios and birds. The exhibition is designed in a chronological fashion
underscoring the highlights of his career like Cubism, the canephor panels of the 1920s and the last landscapes.
The show brings together the artist’s key works thanks to loans from the Musée National d’Art Moderne and

The male nude has been present in art since at least Antiquity
so fittingly, in a groundbreaking show bringing together an
ensemble of works focusing on the male nude, the Musée
d’Orsay is presenting Masculine/Masculine exploring the
aspects and meanings of the male nude in art. The museum has
drawn upon its own collections as well as other French public
collections to present to the public a thematically arranged
show featuring works in an array of mediums from paintings,
drawings, photographs and film by artists ranging from the
influential 18th century painter Jacques-Louis David, to the
symbolist Gustave Moreau to Cézanne who painted nude male
bathers, and Robert Mapplethorpe and Pierre and Gilles. – P.V.

Monumental sculptures in gilded
bronze, splendid enamelled
terra cottas, Saint George and
the Dragon in marble, these
works emerged with the birth
of the Renaissance in Florence
in the early years of the 15th
century. The genesis of this
immense artistic and cultural
movement, in which a new
conception of the world was
revealed, is being showcased
at the Louvre in an exhibition
entitled The Springtime of the
Renaissance – Sculpture and the
Arts in Florence, 1400-1460. Sculpture,
regarded as the essential aspect of this rebirth, is the central focus of the
show, which brings together some 140 works grouped into ten thematic sections. The
exhibition features, in addition to the sculptures, paintings, drawings, silver and gold pieces
and tin-glazed earthenware. The great masterpieces of Donatello are on display along with
majestic works from other illustrious sculptors of the period including Ghiberti and Mino da

Elephants, silently staring into the lens,
lions in a circle, astonishingly human-like
in their behaviour are some of the images
photographer Nick Brandt brings us. His
hauntingly beautiful portrait of Africa,
a mythical Africa, and an enchanted
land peopled with some of the planet’s
most spectacular creatures and which is
tragically in the process of disappearing.
Nick Brandt’s work Across the Ravaged
Land is being showcased by the A. Galerie
while a book of the same name is being
released dedicated “to the billions of
animals in the past, present and future
that have died for no reason at the
hand of man.” Across the Ravaged Land
follows On this Earth and A Shadow Falls
as the third volume in Brandt’s trilogy
explaining through photographs the
tragic disappearance of an eco-system
and the extermination of wild animals in
