  • Science, Space And Life In Other Planets How much can we trust science when we talk about things we cannot observe, nor experiment with?
  • Introduction We already talked about science during our tok classes and talked about it’s effectiveness when trying to learn new things. Now we want to discuss about how effective is science when trying to learn more about life in other planets…
  • Our Mission:
    • Discover if science can really give us exact information about things like aliens, even though they are not able to apply the different steps of the scientific method.
    • Prove that, unlike other possible ways of knowledge, science success relies entirely in the use of evidence that many times can be secretly modified in order to trick people.
    • Prove that science might be very precise, but that it won’t always give us precise information about certain topics.
  • What is science?
    • Comes from the word “Scientia” in Latin which means “knowledge”.
    • Organizes knowledge about the universe.
    • Science can provide both rational and logical explanations.
    • Science is Expressed by applying the scientific method, which consists of:
    • Observation
    • Search of information
    • Hypothesis
    • Experimentation
    • Analysis
    • Conclusions.
  • The First Step >Observation
    • Examination of a phenomenon.
    • by observing, we are able to identify different traits and characteristics of different objects.
    • By doing so, we can study and acquire basic information about what we are going to base our investigation in.
  • Moving On >Research
    • You basically search for more information about your topic in places such as the internet, or in books, magazines, essays and reports.
    Predictions >Hypothesis Before starting to experiment, you must ask questions and make predictions about the outcome of your future experiment. More than one question is needed.
  • Testing >Experimentation
    • In this step, you prepare an experiment to prove your hypothesis and see if your predictions were right after all. This step is mandatory.
    Was I right? >Analysis In this step, you stop and check what happened in your experiment. Here, you check if your hypothesis was right and, if it was right, you move to the last step of the scientific method.
  • The last step >conclusion
    • Your conclusion is the final result of the scientific method. You write down your hypothesis, the results of your experimentation, and the conclusions you obtained from your analysis.

    • The question is:
    • How can we include these ways of knowing in to science ?
    • When science cant prove that there are lives in other planets what do we do?
  • We Start To Wonder...
  • The question remains...
    • Can we really know if we are or are not alone in the universe?
  • Life in other planets?
    • very interesting and very controversial topic.
    • it is very strange that we are the only living beings in existence.
    • scientists create lots of different hypothesis to explain and find an answer to this question.
    • Scientists base their hypothesis in different evidences like water in mars and constructions in other planets.
  • Scientific evidence >real life examples
    • Humans have already found water in mars. This is considered as a sing of civilization and life in that planet.
    • Humans have seen ufos during the terrorist attack to the world trade center in 2001.
    • Videos and testimonies tell us about people having seen ufos in different parts of the world.
  • Scientific evidence >real life examples
    • According to scientific investigations, there is vegetal life in mars.
    • There are constructions, like pyramids, in mars, which create more questions about alien life and the possibility that aliens were here on earth a long time before us.
  • Scientific investigations >The Seti Project
    • Seti: Search for extraterrestrial intelligence
    • Idea copyrighted by the university of California
    • dedicated to tracking space with radio telescopes, hoping to capture some natural signal or message from intelligent beings.
    • However, There is currently no reliable test to confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life.
  • The scientific Point Of View...
    • people have different perspectives about the extraterrestrial phenomenon:
    • It is a fact that is accepted as real, yet, needs more evidence to convince non-believers.
    • Studies such as “ufology” exist to help believers support their theories.
    • These perspectives do not have scientific acceptance. Even ufology is not yet fully accepted by science.
  • How can science tell us the truth?
    • If we want to trust science, there has to be a previous investigation on the topic. In this case [Alien life]…
    • {how can science tell us that there is life in other planets if there is not enough evidence and experiments?}
    • Science is trying to find evidence to prove that the theory of life in other planets is true.
    • Science use ‘observation’ to find evidence. However, observation is not enough to establish a fact, they need more steps of the scientific method.
    • There is not such thing as a decisive evidence that can say for sure that there is life in other planets.
    • All the information they gather from observation is evaluated with human reason. Therefore, it is just another hypothesis.
    • Also, many people say that they have seen clear evidence of life in other planets like UFOs. Those testimonies make scientists search for more answers.
    • These testimonies also play with people’s emotions. As they want new things like life in other planets and aliens, they start believing in extraterrestrials and stuff that may not be true after all.
  • Playing with our minds?
    • people won’t know if there is life in other planets because scientists and people from the NASA usually keep all that information for themselves.
    • Once again, they play with people’s minds and make them believe things that might not be true at all.
  • In Conclusion...
    • Although science may be very precise, it is not absolute.
    • Science is not able to discover if there is life in other planets because they cannot apply the scientific method
    • they cannot observe nor experiment on aliens because they don’t have any solid evidence that proves they actually exist…
