  • Welcome to Communication and Culture.
    • Please have your ‘Investigation’ essay ready to hand in.
    • Today’s theme:
    • Exploration of Cultural Products and Practises essay – 1000 word study.
  • Choice of three options:
    • ‘ Don’t forget the songs that saved your life’; popular music as cultural communication.
    • Retail therapy? Explore the meanings of shopping.
    • The Writing’s on the Wall: the messages of public language from signage to graffiti.
  • The 1000 word exploration:
    • You need to collect more ‘secondary’ material to use in this essay – as well as your own personal observations.
    • These ‘secondary’ sources may include: newspapers, magazines, books, web-sites, film, radio and TV.
    • You can also conduct interviews.
  • Songs that saved your life?
    • Read the lyrics to ‘Common People’ by Pulp.
    • Then note down your answers to the following questions:
    • What are the lyrics saying about life?
    • Do you agree with the lyric’s message?
    • What line or verse do you think is most important to the message of the song?
    • Who would like this kind of song? Do you?
    • Write an extra verse of your own to fit the song!

  • Now think of a song that’s really important to you……….
    • Note down all the reasons why the song meant something to you.
    • Jot down what the song is about – and what it’s message is.
    • Be as detailed as you can.
