5. 5. Restricted Code:

This is how we speak to people who share similar interests, experiences or expectations of the world.

It can depend on a ‘local’ cultural identity.

Question: is this true of Del Boy, Rodney and Gandad?

 6. 6. A Restricted Code also….

Expresses similarity between the speaker – and the person listening to them.

It reinforces group identity or feelings of sameness.

Vocabulary is simple.

Conversation (and catch phrases?) is often predictable.

Is any of this true for Del Boy, Rodney and Grandad?

 7. 7. The Elaborated Code:

Here language use is less concerned with the group – and more with the individual, and their uniqueness.

Is this true of Miranda’s use of language in this episode?

 8. 8. Other features of the Elaborated code:

It has a wider vocabulary with more complex grammar.

Conversation is harder to predict.

Greater focus on ideas or theories.

Is any of this this true of the character of Miranda?

 9. 9. And the controversial bit of Bernstein’s theory is:

He claimed the working-class people use the Restricted code more.

And that middle-class people use the Elaborated code more!

Do you agree?
