As Media Studies – Tv Drama Mes And Use Of Camera - Presentation Transcript

    1. AS Media Studies – TV Drama
      • Question while you wait, about
      • ‘ mise-en-scene’:
      • Why are lighting, location, props and costumes important to any TV drama?
      • Note down the reasons………….
    2. Answer……………
      • Mise-en-scene creates a feeling of ‘realism’ about the plot – it makes the TV drama believable.
      • It also makes characters seem more plausible and ‘real’.
      • It help us understand who characters are in the story - and their role in the narrative.
      • It helps create representations of different groups.
    3. In this sequence…………
      • What do you think the mise-en-scene (choice of lighting, props, costume, location) tells us about the characters and the plot?
      • What connotations do we get from what we see?
    4. Realism is like a ‘sandwich’ of three layers:
      • First level of
      • Realism means
      • selecting the
      • right….
      • Actors
      • Props/objects
      • Locations
      • Voices of actors/
      • noises on set
      • (diegetic sound)
Second level of realism means how the drama is filmed using…. Lighting Use of camera Choice of shot Music (non-diegetic sound). Editing. Third level of realism: The finished ‘product’ on TV. The actual TV drama viewed by the audience. And….. Audience opinions of drama – do they ‘believe’ it?
    5. How is ‘realism’ created for.
      • A hospital drama?
      • A police drama?
      • A spy drama?
      • A costume or historical drama?
    6. The second level of realism………….. Camera angle, shot, movement and composition..
      • Question – how many types of shot can you remember?
      • Note them down and why they are used!
    7. Close-up shot………..
      • Focus on actor and their emotions!
A more ‘personal’ shot - less emphasis on background.
    8. Mid-shot……………..
      • We see the actor and where they are.
Both characters and location are important.
    9. Long-shot………………
      • Emphasis is on where we are in drama.
The location is significant! It communicates something to us about story.
    10. Establishing shot………….
      • Long shot at start that shows you where you are………..
The audience needs to know where we are at the start!
    11. Aerial shot……………..
      • A bird’s eye view…………
Scenery looks more spectacular – and we feel more powerful like we own the place!
    12. Point of view shot………..
      • You see what a character sees……
We feel their emotions – and identify with character!
    13. In this sequence………….
      • Note down the types of shot used.
      • Why is each type of shot used – what connotations does it have?
    14. Camera Angle…………….
      • All part of level two of realism………….
    15. Camera Angle ………
      • Tilted frame.
      • We often move with the camera – and actor!
Why would you use this angle?
    16. High-angle shot:
      • How do we feel as the viewer about people below?
    17. Low-angle shot:
      • How does this make things look?
    18. Using this sequence……..
      • Identify the types of shot used.
      • Note down the connotations of shots used.
      • How does the camera move about?
      • How might the audience react to this sequence?
