Each user has developed its own application This stage is characteristics by era of standards & integration. Cost is also a consideration Mature usage This is stage where the organization uses the system extensively and in a mature manner Decline Each technology has a lifespan & unless it is renovated and extended it may become obsolete

Hence depending on stages CIO must take correct steps, for instance at the end of the contagion stage he must bring in correct control and standards • Like wise in the middle of maturity phase he must look for newer technology & solutions which can transform the existing system & renew there effectiveness • He must aim to provide the maximum period usage of the technology. Every technology associated with a hype which in many instances preceded the reality. Hype literally the level of noise or interest or at times over expectation about a technology. It can be measured in terms of the number of public talks seminars. The hype for any technology usually happens in the Initiation stage Over a period when early inventors used ERP they had a lot of teething problem-both related to product as well as there own maturity using product. Bad news spread faster and there are stories about failures which have experienced in early 90’s,which overcome after a period & product is stabilized We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum

One of the characteristics of the maturity phase is that there is less Noise so to speak but real mature usage. Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division Long range Planning Of Information Systems & technology Gartner Group technology Forecasts How can a CIO use the hype curve for various technologies Gartner published the hyper curve for various technologies The CIO therefore knows what is next stage of technology Some technology do not go thru the entire cycle..that is they perhaps get extinct even before reaching maturing The CIO can therefore plan the choice of his technology. Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division Long range Planning Of Information Systems & technology Gartner Group technology Forecasts Gartner’s Magic Quadrant The Magic Quadrant is a grid which categorizes products forming part of specific categories such as ERP,CRM etc. The two dimensions of the grid are: • The Vision of the product • Extent of Implementation of the vision Hence those products which have a more complete vision in terms of application space which they care too are rated as “high” on the vision dimension The ability to convert vision into reality is shown on Second axis of grid.
