Chapter 1 Human Resource Management1.1 Introduction• One of the important duties of a modern manager is to work with people and produce results.• He must understand how people behave, motivate them and bring about harmony and team work to produce results.• In short, people form the focal point of organizations.
  4. 4. Chapter 1 Human Resource Management When dealing with people, managers face the following challenges:• Human beings are heterogeneous. Each one is unique, in terms of personality, emotions, values, etc.• Human behavior is quite unpredictable and complex.• Modern workforce being more educated, have better skills and enjoy higher standard of living and hence have higher expectations of life situations. The celebrated management guru Peter Drucker remarked, “man, of all the resources available to man, can grow and develop” There is a need to create the right climate for motivation.

Individual Goals.• The purpose drives creates the motivation to work.• Understanding the motivation is crucial to the organization to achieve its Organizational Goals.• The meeting point of Individual Goals and Organizational Goals usually brings about certain obstacles in working.• Addressing these obstacles is a major challenge, among others in dealing with people.

The Indian Institute of Personnel Management (IIPM) has defined the scope as follows:• Personnel aspect- concerned with functions ranging from manpower planning to separation.• Welfare aspect – dealing with working conditions and amenities.• Industrial Relations aspect – covers labor- management relations.
