It's time to get yourself noticed

  1. 1. Want2get on? is a unique career coaching service that offers 1:1 support for those whowant to draw upon their Christian faith and apply it in a practical way to their job situation.www.want2geton.co.uk Tel: 07503 177126 charles@want2geton.co.ukIt’s time to get yourself noticed! When I was young, one of my father’s favourite expressions for someone who was good at netalking about themselves was, ‘‘He’s got more front than Marks & Spencer Even though I s Spencer’.understood that this was not a form of flattery, I used to think that it would be fantastic forsomeone to be larger and more famous than a store that has sold at least thousand pairs ofundies and socks to each person in the UK!A big part of the British psyche i to downplay our achievements and to relish in grand isunderstatements in response to major events. Allegedly after being hit by a cannon ball at Allegedly, the Battle of Waterloo, the Earl of Uxbridge declared: ‘By God, sir, Ive lost my leg! to which ‘By leg!’Wellington replied ‘By God, sir, so you have! By have!’The antithesis to British downplay can be found in no better person than our favourite over over-the-top US film star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who said: top ‘I knew I was destined for great things. People will say that kind of thinking is totally I immodest. I agree. Modesty is not a word that applies to me in any way - I hope it never will.’Talk yourself-up!I‘m no marketing expert, but after sitting on both sides of the job interview table, I can say mwith certainty that each time I either got the job or decided to employ a person, it was as aresult of the ability to self-promote more effectively than the other candidates. promote© Copyright Want2geton? 2. 2. When I coach people looking for work, one of the concepts that many people find hard tograsp is: if you don’t sell yourself, then nobody else is going to do it for you! It doesn’t meanthat you have to suddenly wear a Terminator black leather jacket and gain an Austrianaccent, but it may mean that you have to start developing an ability to ‘talk yourself up’ andto promote yourself through the right networks. In the bible, the Book of Daniel describes how the King of Babylon wanted to recruit someIsraelites into his service. I don’t know how many CVs and failed application forms hewaded through, but the King hit the jackpot when he discovered four men, including Daniel, who excelled in (Daniel 1:4): • Fitness & Personal appearance • Aptitude for learning • Skills & Intellect • QualificationsFit for a kingThe fact that these four men were discovered by the King shows that they must have beenexhibiting these qualities and, just as importantly, promoting themselves effectively. When looking for work, one of the key ways to develop your ‘shop front’ is to have astrategy that will help you to become noticed. You probably won’t be employed by a kingbut, if you’re doing some of the following, you’ll stand a chance of getting noticed: • Turbo-charge your CV by converting it to an infographic – www.vizualize.me • Linked In is a great way of promoting yourself and finding a job through networks – www.linkedin.com • Do some voluntary work for a good cause – not only will this will give you extra skills but it will also make your job application stand out from the crowd – www.do-it.org www.worldwidehelpers.org, http://www.bunac.org/volunteer/usa/ http://www.goabroad.com/volunteer-abroad/search/united-states/volunteer-abroad-1 • Brush up on your job interview technique – www.jobsite.co.uk/bemyinterviewer • Brush up on your job interview technique – www.jobsite.co.uk/bemyinterviewer© Copyright Want2geton?
