Remediation Or Special Needs Ideas V2 - Presentation Transcript

    1. Remediation/Special Needs Ideas Beginning of the School Year Want to see what information your students retained over the summer? Whether or not your students were working in the Study Island program the previous year, assign a “diagnostic pre-test”. Do this by creating an assignment from the previous grade level with every topic BUT the pre- and post-test marked. This will give you a good indication of what you need to focus on reviewing from the previous year. Categorizing Students Have students in one class working on multiple grade levels? Not a problem. In Class Manager you are able to set up as many classes as you need. You can set up three different classes, for example, and then place the students into classes based on their grade level. Now you can assign them material from the appropriate grade level program and run a class report for each level. Peer Buddies Try pairing students who are struggling readers with a Study Island Peer Buddy. Staying Afloat Throughout the year, as you are using Study Island to reinforce what is being taught during your classroom instruction time, run reports at the end of the week to see who is struggling in what areas. If you notice a student is slipping in a topic/subject, give them a life preserver/tutoring pass. (This is a flotation device made out of construction paper or printed off of the computer.) On the pass include their name as well as the date and time of their tutoring session. The idea of the pass looking like a life preserver references the fact that you are trying to help keep them afloat by offering tutoring. For those students that do attend the tutoring sessions to improve their scores, offer a small reward to them for their efforts on a job well done. Topic Packets Utilize the Printable Worksheet feature for students who are more hands-on. Print out the entire question bank for the topic(s). Have the students work on the questions at their own pace, or a pace you feel meets their needs. The students will be able to highlight, underline, and even work on the questions in a different order. Once all of the questions within the topic are completed, they can then log in to Study Island, select the total number of questions for the selected topic and input their answers. (**You will need to remind them that the questions will be in a different order on the computer than on their print out.) CPS Integration Does your school have access to CPS? Implement Study Island into your classroom with the use of this system! The teacher can do guided teaching while projecting Study Island onto the large screen, and still be able to generate Individual Student Reports. No need to worry about confidentiality, as the students’ answer choices will not be displayed on the large screen unless you prefer. You will be able to assist all of your students as needed while setting the pace for your class.
