15.02, Group 1 — Problems concerning sustainability of Energy System in Ukraine - Presentation Transcript

    1. Problems concerning sustainability of Energy System in Ukraine
    2. Contents - Introduction - Overview of problems in energy system - Economical issues - Ecology issues - Social issues - State of renewable energy in Ukraine - Conclusion
    3. USSR problems UKRAINE
    4. Problems Economy Ecology • Limited domestic resources • Deprecated technologies • Import-dependency • Environmental pollution • Moral aspects Social
    5. Economical aspects - 60.7% of energy is produced using imported resources. - Up to 93 percent of energy production in Ukraine is based on non-renewable resources. - During past decade GDP energy content increased by 30%. - 14.3% of produced energy is lost during transportation.
    6. Ecological aspects - 4.6 millions of hectares are polluted with radionuclides. - 6.85 million tons emissions in the atmosphere in 2005. - Lack of environmental friendly technologies. - Landfill remains main method of waste utilization. - Government pays too little attention to environmental legislation.
    7. Emissions in the atmosphere Thousands tons 8000 7500 7000 6500 6000 5500 5000 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005
    8. Emissions Intensity Levels and Trends
    9. Social aspects - People are used to cheap energy. - Problem of pollution is far from being prior for most people. - Working conditions in extractive industry leaves much to be desired.
    10. Renewable energy sources • The potential for wind power in Ukraine is 70 million MWh per year. • Hydro potential has been estimated to be 17 TWh/a for large and 3.7 TWh/a for small hydro power plants. • Nationwide, there appear to be about 40 solar thermal installations with a total installed solar collector surface of perhaps 10,000 m2 and an installed capacity of about 5-8 MWth.
    11. Problems with renewable energy sources in Ukraine • Huge capital investments are needed to switch from non- renewable energy sources. • Ukrainian government does virtually nothing to develop energy system based on renewables. Instead they promote the development of nuclear energy sources. • The development of renewable resources in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union remains limited primarily to expansion or refurbishment of existing hydroelectric units. • Problems of corruption and excessive bureaucracy.
    12. Everything will be alright ! At least we hope so…
