15. West Cork Horseback Archers
The military technique of horseback archery
was practised by many, including the
Romans, the Parthians and most famously,
the Huns, who galloped out of the east
spreading terror across 5th century Europe.
Renowned for their speed, maneuverability
and the deadly accuracy of their arrows,
Atila's horsemen ushered in the Dark Ages.
Sixteen hundred years later, horseback
archery is an international sport with a
thrilling allure of speed, derring-do, and a
terrific sense of achievement on mastering
the co-ordination of hand and eye.
Based in Ballydehob, the West Cork Horseback Archers are a group of friends who pick
up each others arrows, bows, and even, on sad occasions, each other. We are put
through our paces by Zoltan Gere who trained and competed in Hungary under world
champion Kassai Lajos. Being a mobile sport, horseback archery technique differs from
that of target or field archery. We use traditional horseback bows without arrow rests or
sights, and shoot from the chest rather than the face. Our training is a mixture of volleys,
timed shots, target practice and speed with movement. This involves shooting while
running, firing in a sequence of front, side and back, and shooting at targets placed
succeedingly at 5 metre distances. We also learn how to 'blind nock', that is, load our
arrows while staying focused on our target,
and to hold our arrows in our bow hand, not
in a quiver. We finish our training sessions
with 'meditation shots', where we close our
eyes when firing. This is very important for
'muscle memory' so that our arms always
come to the same position for shooting.
It is important to train your horse slowly and
thoroughly, as the unaccustomed shock of a
fired arrow can send the untrained horse into
orbit. This involves getting your horse to
stand patient and unflinching as you twang
your bow and drop arrows all over the place. We string up loads of bunting to get them
used to ignoring flickering distractions and play catch with a rugby ball while riding
around the arena. You must be a confident rider, as you will be riding without reins, which
can be unnerving. For the non-riders there is an option of learning chariot archery with
the pony and trap.
So finally, after months of training, comes that moment to bring all the practice together,
as you nock, aim and shoot a target which whizzes past faster than you would think
possible. The sensation is incredible. Come find us on Facebook or contact Siobhan 086
193 0199 if you would like to know more about our training schedule.

This family of 12 children with their parents Toby and Brenda Willis of Nashville,
Tennessee, have been making waves in the USA where they are greatly appreciated for
their Irish music and dancing talent. With real family charm, they blend Irish, Bluegrass
and much more to produce a fresh, exciting 21st century music experience.
On their way to the Fleadh Ceoil in Cavan, they have kindly volunteered to do three
concerts in aid of Focus on the Family Ireland, in Bray, Bantry and Limerick. The
concerts are unusual in that they are FREE of charge. If you enjoy it there will be an
opportunity at the end to contribute to Focus on the Family Ireland.
The Willis Clan come to Bantry at the invitation of the Bantry Christian Fellowship,
and will be welcomed in the Square by Mayor Kathleen Tessyman and members of
Bantry Town Council. Weather permitting, they will do a warm-up open-air gig on the

the United States will last well into August at least. In the heartland of America, farmers pump water from a massive underground lake
known as the Ogallala Aquifer to irrigate their fields.
But even when this current drought ends, our problems will not be over. The truth is that
we are facing a very severe long-term water crisis in the western United States. The problem is that the Ogallala Aquifer is rapidly being pumped dry. According to the
U.S. Geological Survey, "a volume equivalent to two-thirds of the water in Lake Erie"
Just check out the following facts from foodandwaterwatch.org.... has been permanently drained from the Ogallala Aquifer since 1940.
• California has a 20-year supply of freshwater left Once upon a time, the Ogallala Aquifer had an average depth of about 240 feet.
• New Mexico has only a ten-year supply of freshwater left Today, the average depth of the Ogallala Aquifer is just 80 feet, and in some parts of
Texas the water is totally gone.
• The U.S. interior west is probably the driest it has been in 500 years, according to the
National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Geological Survey Right now, the Ogallala Aquifer is being drained at a rate of approximately 800
gallons per minute. Once that water is gone it will not be replaced.
• Lake Mead, the vast reservoir of the Colorado River, has a 50 percent chance of
running dry by 2021 So what will the "breadbasket of America" do then? Most Americans do not realize this,
but we are facing some major, major water problems.
The 1,450 mile long Colorado River is probably the most important body of water in the
southwestern United States. Let us pray that this current drought ends and let us pray that everyone around the world
will have enough to eat.
Unfortunately, the Colorado River is rapidly dying.

Hello Walter
I don't know if this story would be of any interest to poultry keepers.
One of my hens had , what i diagnosed, as a skin infection (with mites I believe) the
feathers in the affected areas had fallen out and refused to grow back and the
surrounding skin red and inflamed.
So I made an infused herbal oil using 3 herbs, Wormwood (Artemesia absinthum),
Marigold flowers (Calendula officinalis) and Garlic (Allium sativum).
When finished I made the oil into an ointment by using beeswax and proceeded to treat
my hen, daily, applying the ointment to the affected areas... mainly on the chest.
Within a few days the red inflamed skin cleared and now 8 days later her feathers on
chest have grown back thickly..
What a pleasure to see!

I would like to do this to let the folk in West Cork know how much of a gem the place is. I
have no affiliation to anyone down there.
‘Me and my young family went down to Skibbereen for a weekend break recently, and to
say that we had a great time would be a huge understatement. We stayed at a fantastic
old mill outside the town, and the hospitality shown to us was superb.
We spent half a day at the market in town, (the best Market I have seen in this country)
where we bought a superb hand crafted wand, and this was followed by tasting
Kangaroo kebabs, and chatting away to the friendly locals.
The remainder of the day was spent on Tragumna, which is an incredibly well kept beach.
Saturday morning was spent having an archery lesson, which was awesome
I would like to thank all that we met for making the trip a complete joy.
