  • KING HENRY VIII
    • Born June 28th 1491
    • were-GRENNWICH PALACE.
    • To-the mother of Elizabeth of York and to the father of King Henry VII
  • EARLY EDUCATION
    • had been taught the alphabet and the rudiments of English Grammar
    • used a Horn Book
    • The lord’s prayer was inside his Horn Book
  • ACCOMPLISH
    • He was the first English monarch to be educated under the influence of the Renaissance.
    • He became a accomplished scholar, linguist, musician, and athlete
  • 1st wife of King Henry
    • Catherine of ARAGON
    • Married on June 11th and was 18
    • The youngest surviving child of the 'Catholic Kings' of Spain,
    • was born on 16 December 1485
    • same year that Henry VII established the Tudor dynasty
    • Gave him first sonh
  • 2nd wife
    • Anne Boleyn
    • Anne Boleyn is one of the most famous queens in English history
    • Was killed because she couldn’t give King Henry the son he desperately needed
    • Was executed for thought of being a witch

    • Was the 2nd wife who gave King Henry a son

    • Anne of Cleves
    • King Henry referred to her as “Flanders Mare”
    • King Henry was grateful for her cooperation and granted her a generous income and several homes, including Hever Castle.

    • Became king when his brother Arthur and father died
    • Was just shy of 18 when he became King
  • SO WHAT DID HE DO???
    * He was responsible for the reformation in England and founded the Church of England.
    * He promoted Parliamentary Government by extending representation and expanding the privileges of both houses.
    * He enhanced the standing of the Monarchy and created a new sense of National identity.
    * He was the first English Monarch to authorize the translation of the Bible into English.
  • What else
    * During his reign he built or re-modeled 70 palaces and had a fortress erected along the South coast.
    * He popularized the art of portraiture and patronized the Arts.
    * He introduced progressive and efficient taxation schemes.
    * He was the principle founder of the English Navy, which was to be the basis for England's future dominance on the sea.
  • KIDS
    • King Henry had three children
    • Edward, Elizabeth, Mary
  • DEATH
    • AT age 22 he caught small pox
    • had his first attack of malaria. This disease plagued him for the rest of his life.
    • At age 54 He could hardly walk and was carried everywhere by sedan chair.
    • He spent the last 8 days of his life in bed. He was too weak to lift a glass of water to drink.    
    • He died amid the horrendous stench of his bursting leg ulcers.
