  2. 2. Different university rankings are widely used fordecision making at higher education. These rankingsmay be common or specialized, depending of theirapplication area. In these report the results of statistical analysis arepresented for such indexes: R1 – Top 500 worlduniversities – 2008; R2 - ARWU or Shanghai ranking-2008; R3 – The Times Good university guide 2008(Great Britain universities ranking); R4 - WorldUniversities ranking on the Web_Top 8000; R5 –Ukrainian Top-200 universities ranking (DzerkaloTyzhnya), etc. Two types of parameters were studied – empiricaldistribution functions and correlation between rankingcomponents.
  3. 3. For R2 Alumni. The total number of the alumni ofan institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.Alumni are defined as those who obtain bachelor,Masters or doctoral degrees from the institution.Different weights are set according to the periods ofobtaining degrees. The weight is 100% for alumniobtaining degrees in after 1991, 90% for alumniobtaining degrees in 1981-1990, 80% for alumniobtaining degrees in 1971-1980, and so on, and finally10% for alumni obtaining degrees in 1901-1910. If aperson obtains more than one degrees from aninstitution, the institution is considered once only.. Weight – 10%/
  4. 4. Award. The total number of the staff of aninstitution winning Nobel Prizes in Physics,Chemistry, Medicine and Economics and FieldsMedal in Mathematics. Staff is defined as those whowork at an institution at the time of winning the prize. The weight is 100% for winners in after 2001, 90% forwinners in 1991-2000, 80% for winners in 1981-1990,70% for winners in 1971-1980, and so on, and finally10% for winners in 1911-1920. If a winner is affiliatedwith more than one institution, each institution isassigned the reciprocal of the number of institutions. For Nobel prizes, if a prize is shared by more thanone person, weights are set for winners according totheir proportion of the prize.. Weight – 20%
  5. 5. HiCi. The number of highly cited researchers in21 subject categories. These individuals are the mosthighly cited within each category. The definition ofcategories and detailed procedures can be found atthe website of Thomson ISI. Weight - 20 N&S. The number of articles published in Natureand Science between 2003 and 2007. To distinguishthe order of author affiliation, a weight of 100% isassigned for corresponding author affiliation, 50% forfirst author affiliation (second author affiliation if thefirst author affiliation is the same as correspondingauthor affiliation), 25% for the next author affiliation, and 10% for other author affiliations. Only publicationsof article type are considered. Weight -20
  6. 6. PUB. Total number of articles indexed in ScienceCitation Index-Expanded and Social Science CitationIndex in 2007. Only publications of article type areconsidered. When calculating the total number ofarticles of an institution, a special weight of two wasintroduced for articles indexed in Social ScienceCitation Index. Weight – 20. PCP. The weighted scores of the above fiveindicators divided by the number of full-timeequivalent academic staff. If the number of academicstaff for institutions of a country cannot be obtained, the weighted scores of the above five indicators isused. Weight - 10
